I worked at Kohl's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Routine job, punch in, punch out, couple short breaks depending on how long your shift is. Met some nice people.

    Cons

They start you out at minimum wage, $8.50/hr. Received a raise of 19 cents or something ridiculous like that after being employed with them for a year and honestly working hard and diligently every shift. Come to find out, fellow co-workers had been there for over 5 years and still earn under $10/hr. Worked nearly every Saturday and Sunday whether I liked it or not, and then maybe one or two evening shifts (4 or 5pm-Close) during the week. Scheduling was flaky, you could never really rely on getting enough hours as they tend to cut employees' hours when business slows down. But they never failed to put you on for holidays and Black Friday (1am-3pm). Always felt like maybe I'd get promoted or taken care of compensation-wise for going the extra mile as that's the concept that they insinuate during their cute little daily "sales floor huddle", but nope. This multi-billion dollar corporation won't even give you a 25 cent raise nor the time of day to earn it. Store managers work their butts off year-round, all hours of the day/night and holidays, all for around a salary of $50k.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees, and I don't mean with the friends and family discounts and employee discount BS, nice cover up but that doesn't pay the bills. You promise career advancement opportunities but seldom deliver. You schedule your employees to suit your operational needs with little to no regard for their needs of consistent hours and pay. Stop being so stingy and demanding. Just for the record, I am college educated and overqualified, as are many of the store's associates.

I worked at Kohl's full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The employee discount was nice but it didn't make up for anything else

    Cons

They always preceived that there was values but what went on behind the seen was something different

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Getting rid of the upper crust in your Idaho stores would help the most. Letting hard workers go for being what they said was slow workers was rediculous. We about 15 older workers were let go just before our five year match in our 401 K's which was deplorable.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

If you work in the corporate office, its a great place to learn about the retail business from the ground up. The company is great with helping out organizations like Susan G. Komen.

    Cons

The buying offices consist of 80% women, under 30. Atmosphere could feel like the movie "Mean Girls" if you were more focused on work than fitting in or did not start there straight out of college. Also, they give you the understanding that you have a shot at moving up from your position, until you see that they only tend to promote and focus on those that went to the colleges of universities that they recruit from. In my nearly 4 years, I only remember a handful of specialists being promoted to an analyst position. The remainder either quit or switched departments.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please make things more fair for Merchandise Specialists. They work hard and learn the buying offices from the ground up and are great to promote because of that, regardless of the school they attended.

I have been working at Kohl's part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Pretty good at working with your schedule. Most of the managers are pretty laid back. They want employees to be able to make independent decisions and not have to ask permission for everything. If you ask to transfer departments you most likely can.

    Cons

Pretty much the most dead end job ever, I worked here for 3 years and never got promoted even though I was trained in almost every department. Don't expect any pay raises, you won't get them. Working in the jewelry department I always felt guilty selling our p.o.s. stuff....the prices are jacked way up and then put on sales to trick customers into thinking they are getting a steal. Thanks to Kohl's "yes we can" policy customers constantly try to rip us off, "Oh you used this vacuum for 2 years and never emptied it?? No you don't have a receipt for this item I know you probably stole. Of course you can return it!". I understand that they are trying to compete with companies like Nordstrom, but dealing with the same scammers week after week and not being able to stop them is very frustrating.

I worked at Kohl's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Decent coworkers and managers from my experience
To some the push for credit was a Con. To me, it was a Plus. It taught you good marketing techniques to make product appealing to our customers.
    Awesome Discount

    Cons

Pay was awful. For a company that encourages and pushes for results with Credit and have expectations to market to customers, they really don't reimburse it. I made more in Fast Food.
The training is awful during the seasonal holidays. I've seen Lost Prevention fire cashiers for offering discounts that they were trained to offer.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Provide more organized job training.

I worked at Kohl's part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Discount on nice clothes. Clothes are trendy.

    Cons

A few colleagues were immature and started unnecessary conflicts.
Management was usually part of said conflicts.
    PAy was not great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Raise pay and try to keep conflict between employees at a minimum.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Benefits are great. Company leadership appears to genuinely care about the work force. Time off can be great. Work from home one day a week when able.

    Cons

Growth in my area is nearly impossible. Nearly everyone is frustrated with the current status within marketing, and while changes are in the works, they are slow coming - This is assuming they are coming. Cube wasteland!!! Sometimes your leadership suggest its up to the employees to change the culture, but this is only partially the issue.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take large sweeping action to improve the culture quickly. Change the environment, change the lack of growth opportunities, etc. A few large, quick changes will have an immediate impact and will represent a great first step.

Current Employee - CFH Assistant Store Manager

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Salary is good at the entry management level. Also has a paid internship for college students. Just implemented a bonus for assistant managers but it is based in how well the company does

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations for their managers. You say "work/life balance" but we have to wake yo at 3am to go back to the store to re-alarm the building, work more than 55 hours a week because we get reamed out for work being incomplete by incompetent part timers, get demeaned by customers daily because if the coupon policies, and get no real recognition for any of the hard work we do. We are people too. Treat us as such

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please realize that you are asking too much for your managers and expecting us to be superman and woman. Please be reasonable and stop putting so much pressure on us to be perfect and have the perfect store. At least recognize us for the hard work we do. You're "special" talks on KNET don't mean anything when you come to the store and act like you're not running us ragged and harshly criticize our work

I have been working at Kohl's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Most of the associates were great people that turned out to be lifelong friends. Flexible hours! Good discounts on clothes.

    Cons

Not enough hours or pay. Management looks down on you! They would put pressure on you to get the job done but wouldn't help. The female customers were worse than the male customers. The bathrooms and fitting rooms were impossible to keep clean! You are constantly pushed to sell Kohl's credit card.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The benefits and pay could be a whole lot better. Management could show appreciation for their associates.
