I have been working at Kohl's

    Pros

Good place to grow and develop personal characteristics and understand leadership. Nice employee discount.

    Cons

Poor compensation, with little consideration for their full-time employees that work in any position beneath an ASM position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to understand that their full-time employees cannot live off of 36hrs a week, and such low income. Even if all that was needed is a small supplemental income on the side, their 'open availability' policy makes it difficult to work with getting a second job.

    I worked at Kohl's part-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Varied tasks - if you're only looking for part time, its actually not a bad place to be, just don't try to make a life with one of these jobs. I enjoyed my job here for various reasons, my coworkers were usually good to work with, the type of work you're doing varies and generally you get to do the things you enjoy doing on the sales floor. Would recommend for someone looking for a weekend job.

    Cons

They expect you to jump up and come to work when they snap their fingers, regardless of the fact that, any other time, they're going to stiff everyone for hours - they hire 50 seasonal people and then dump everyone's hours to 20 per week until black friday when everyone is supposed to work a mandatory shift (it's the only day they actually need all those people). The review process is rigged - a manager told me flat out that they couldn't give me one more point on my review because it would mean a better raise (which, they acknowledged that I deserved). You have to suck up to move up here, it doesn't matter if you do a fantastic job and don't cause any trouble and then go on to train entire groups of new people, multiple times a year as well as several supervisors and kill yourself to prove to them that you are a good worker/deserve a promotion. Rotating shifts make sure you never know which way is up, or fully recover for the next work shift (which could be as close as 6 hours away from your last one, regardless of the fact that that is not legal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Dump the rotating shift format - it weakens your workforce. Consider giving people the better raises; it's a few cents, but it would make a big return on investment for morale and productivity.

I have been working at Kohl's

    Pros

The people that I work with there are great. The majority of them are nice and friendly, and are good to talk to and make friends with. The hours are fairly flexible (not amazingly flexible but not terrible either). You get paid (not a lot, but it's something). That's pretty much it.

    Cons

It is retail, meaning that they really want you to be available weekends and nights. So the hours suck, which is a bummer (but you'll find that at any retail job). Most customers don't really appreciate you or understand how difficult the job really is, so that's another bummer (but again, that's just the thing with retail).

The Kohl's company is INSANE about credit cards! Each day the entire store has a quota to make, as well as each cashier. When you don't make your quota they cut your hours. If you don't sell enough credit cards they won't ever assign you to work the register (which could be a good thing depending on who you are lol). I don't blame my managers, because I know the pressure from corporate is enormous. But overall, selling credit cards is the most important thing to Kohl's.

Corporate is....interesting. Corporate changes their mind on policies all the time. They are also pretty wishy washy on the store policies, meaning that if it makes a customer happy to do the opposite of the store policy, corporate would probably do it. They are scared to death of loosing customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Your credit card policy is ridiculous. If you really cared about your customers and employees you wouldn't put so much pressure on us to sell credit cards!

It wasn't the worst first job someone could have.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The pay and benefits are competitive. There are perks like onsite cafeterias, daycare, and wellness/fitness center. Work/life balance really depends on what area you are in, but my particular team has been very flexible by letting me work from home some days.

    Cons

The culture is very political and passive-aggressive. People live and die by the corporate hierarchy. Middle management has no trust in it's employees to do their jobs and make good decisions. More often than not management just creates chaos by micro managing everything.

In product development there is an obscene amount of work and rework and more rework with very little outcome. Kohl's spends a lot of money utilizing trends services and buying samples in order create relevant, elevated product, but you would never know it looking at the product that ends up in the store. If you are a creative type, get ready to slowly chip away at your soul day by day.

    Upward mobility is nearly impossible.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let people do their jobs. The less you say, the better.
