I worked at Kohl's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

Employee discount is great because you can stack percentages and get great discounts. I had some good managers that took time to get to know me. They are very flexible with your schedule.

    Cons

In the beginning they make it seem like they really care about you and making sure you get a lot of hours, but then after your first week they only care about how many credits or email you got. I understand that its important to get credits and emails but its kind of ridiculous what they make you do. I had a manager stand at a register in front of me, call me on the phone and tell me to "make sure I ask the customer for their email", while the customer was in front of me. Every conversation I had with associates and managers was how many credits I got today or how many emails and that if I keep asking I'll get some.
It's an easy job, but you're standing on your feet all day and when its not holiday season hours are horrible if you don't get credits. One week I was scheduled for 8 hours for the whole week.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop forcing credits and emails down your customers throats.

I worked at Kohl's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The company has good benefits, bonus opportunities for management level staff, good core principals, many self-learning training opportunities and challenging developmental opportunities.

    Cons

For distribution management, work-life balance is extremely difficult. Key leadership tends to be micro-managers at the very top levels which can discourage innovation and sacrifice key performance. Unfortunately, this can also result in low morale and high turnover.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Create an inclusive, innovative environment. Minimize micro-management. Allow employees to make mistakes and learn from them. Become less critical and intimidating. Remember to invest in your team's development. Promote people outside of your general "circle" to demonstrate that promotion opportunities actually exist. Listen and act upon your team's feedback or you will continue to turn over employees.

I worked at Kohl's full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Vacation time, personal time, health insurance, all great offerings through the company

    Cons

Workload was fair and equitable, yet if the company would've invested a small amount into fitting room monitor, the benefits would have been threee-fold. A typical weekend generates about 20 roll rods of recovery, and difficult to maintain, when floor associates are all on register

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

AHR needs to be increased for those stores with long term associates. Many in those stores are making $15+ in building with AHR's of $9 or less. This discrepancy does not allow enough "hands on deck" to deal with the customer flow, inhibiting the service given

    I have been working at Kohl's full-time

    Pros

Management and associates are friendly. Company is not all that bad to work for compared to other retailers. Promotes from within the company. Good for a part time job.

    Cons

Compensation is less than desirable especially for associates holding a "supervisor" position. A lot of responsibility for little pay.

Growth opportunity exists but can take many years to move up at all, which is very discouraging for someone looking to build a career with the company.

Constantly being harassed about getting credit.

Crazy schedule! In one week you may work at 4am or 8am or 3pm til midnight and be scheduled back at 5am the next morning. No normal person can live like that.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you want to retain quality and knowledgeable employees consider more adequate compensation. A hard worker will only work so hard for so long for so little.

I worked at Kohl's full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Benefits are nice and it is a strong company overall.

    Cons

The biggest problems here are the work-life balance and the very low pay. Schedules change frequently so making plans is difficult. The store I was in had poor upper management and there was no good culture to work with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There needs to be more oversight of store level management.
