I love my job, but the pay sucks for how much work I do.

I have been working at Kohl's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I love the customer interactions. My managers are super nice and helpful, and you're always busy doing something. I'm rarely ever bored at work. The employee discounts are wonderful! Also, the flexible scheduling is a big plus because I'm a college student.

    Cons

The pay. My God, it's super low. I'm a student and I'm struggling to pay my bills with this job.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to be paid more. You pay us barely above minimum wage. Kohl's attracts a lot of students because of your flexible scheduling, but they're gonna have just as much trouble as me in paying their bills. Unless their parents are paying for them to go to school, unlike myself. Other area jobs (other than Kohl's) require less work for their part-time employees, but of the people I talk to, they get paid much more than I do.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Exempt employees start with 3 weeks of vacation, plus a comp week to take in Q1 for the stores division. This is to compensate for the 6-day weeks we work from Thanksgiving until Christmas.

    Cons

Annual salary increases are minimal (usually 1% to 3%).
Company has slowed store expansion/growth dramatically in last 4 years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve profit by employing more controls over non-receipted returns.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Most co workers are great, money. Benefits are ok for this day and age.

    Cons

Hours, expectations are unrealistic for most stores as most are grossly underfunded. Jobs are being "eliminated" or moved around while other people get 'promised' open positions. Politics are not fair.

    I worked at Kohl's

    Pros

Learned a lot about business. Two out of the three managers I had were willing to teach me 'the ropes'. Good benefits even for part time employees.

    Cons

Money not great at this level with all the responsibility you have. Hard work and somewhat stressful. You are hounded about meeting credit goals and getting everybody in the store to meet their credit goals as well. Christmas hours are hectic and customers get crazy! That's retail

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote your employees! Be a leader not just a manager and sit in your office unattached from your employees. Get to know them and work side by side with them. That is how you build a team that respects you. CORPORATE...hire from with in!!! Why are you hiring these college grads that have never been in retail or worked at a Kohls? Develop and promote the assistant managers who have been with the company a year or so! They know more than that graduate with the piece of paper! Don't make it political either.

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Customer Experience focused, everyone should leave happy and saved money. Unique Items and products that can only be found at Kohls makes it enjoyable. Great mix of people to work with everyday and get to know as family.

    Cons

Not enough floor associates for all the up keep and weekly tasks. Compensation should be much higher to compete with other retail stores. Store hours would be great if they went back to being open a hour sooner like they used to be. Was great to stop by there for last minute things or school clothes before going to school.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

When having a review 90 days after Hire, you should consider increasing pay if they excel at everything instead of waiting for the yearly review.

Current Employee - Loss Prevention Supervisor

I have been working at Kohl's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

This really only applies to Loss Prevention jobs- flexibility with writing your own schedule for LP supervisors, relaxed dress code, decent benefits

    Cons

Lack of ethics and professionalism that runs deep with store management, district management, and loss prevention. almost impossible to get promoted past an LP supervisor position, the store hours are getting increasingly out of hand (i.e. open 24 hours the week before Christmas, opening at 8pm on Thanksgiving Day, etc)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop your people and actually promote them instead of always choosing outside hires or hires from the corporate office rather than within the LP store division. It would improve morale to see your peers moving up occasionally, even if you still haven't had the opportunity. Actually take a look at what goes on in the stores. The district managers often are aware of issues and turn a blind eye.
