I have been working at Kohler full-time

    Pros

Brand strength in marketplace, flexibility (home office)

    Cons

Little to no advancement opportunities without requiring relocation to WI or another region.

    Advice to Management

Micromanagement is not motivating. Consider adding manager/specialist positions-sales reps covering too much territory and accounts leads to burnout!

    Pros

Lots of "extras": Company picnic, appreciation events, after work social hours, community involvement, team building activites. Saw lots of opportunities to explore other areas of the company with project work. Good merit increases.

    Cons

Personally had no opportunity for advancement. Like many companies during the economic down turn, positions were consolidated and even when things improved many were fulfilling roles previously completed by multiple employees.

    Advice to Management

Promote based on skill and ability to deliver. Saw too many employees promoted because their manager didn't want to address issues with them.

    Pros

Competitive pay. Advancement opportunities. Opportunity to work with many materials. Fully equipped packaging test lab. Young group who work well together. Kohler in general is a great place to work.

    Cons

Lack of recognition. Lack of transparency with regard to decisions that effect the group. Kohler is a metrics-focused company and those metrics often negatively affect decision making.

    Advice to Management

Give recognition where recognition is due and out more emphasis on the value of developing staff; not the cost.

I have been working at Kohler as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

There are plenty of opportunities with the company. If you can't get in through the front door, go through the back. Basically, what I am saying is if you find it difficult to get hired on directly, work with one of the contractor agencies as another way to get in with the company.

    Cons

No set period of time before getting hired directly. This can be frustrating when you know you work for a good company but unable to obtain direct hire employment.

    Advice to Management

Set time frames or performance standards to help facilitate the transition from contractor to a direct hire.

    Pros

Family Environment Company takes care of the employees Opportunity to advance Opportunity to change disciplines

    Cons

Lack of recognition Run lean when it comes to headcount Plenty of stress to get projects done as fast as possible at the lowest cost Need more communication of the company vision

I worked at Kohler full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great people, absolute commitment to customer quality.

    Cons

    Centrally controlled, therefore necessarily bureacratic.

    Advice to Management

Trust the great people who work for you to make decisions.

I worked at Kohler full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

There are no shortages of opportunities to expand your job skills if you are salaried. Somewhat less for hourly, but that has more to do with the union than willingness to promote. I found the union pretty easy to work with if you are willing to work with them. For the area, pay is good, though one can go to Milwaukee and make 30% more. The benefits are phenomenal.

    Cons

Big,plodding organization that remains inbred in places because some long-term employees dig in their heels. The divisional management sometimes does not provide adequate guidance. I had both good and bad in that regard during my 8-year run. I would still be there had an opportunity I could not pass up not appeared.

    Advice to Management

Remember who butters the bread. Put obstinate long-term employees on notice that it is grow or die. Reward innovation.
