Kroger treats their employees pretty well.

    Bakery Clerk (Former Employee)
    Riverside, Montgomery, OH

ProsPaid time off (vacation and personal days for even part time employees), good chance of advancement, all managers listened well if you had any suggestions or complaints.

ConsManagers (for whole store and departments) might not stay for more than a year. Lots of high up rotation, although it isn't unheard of for a department manager to stay for years.

Kroger has helped me grow as an individual.

    Cashier (Current Employee)
    Katy, TX

ProsI enjoy working at Kroger, because they have given me the opportunity to grow depending on my level of work i do.

ConsI do not make as much as i would in other retail situations.

Advice to Senior ManagementI enjoy having A job, yet i think it is unfair for Kroger to pain its employees so low. I also believe the union is a lost cause that is bad for our company.

    Good first job

    Deli Clerk (Former Employee)
    Powder Springs, GA

ProsThey are flexible with your schedule if you are enrolled in school, also you gain experience for a first timer.

ConsSome personal problems may occur, for instance a customer may make a remark that might upset you. Also pay rate sucks.

ProsThe co-workers made the job worthwhile, & the benefits were decent, too.

ConsThe pay was too low for the amount of work done.

    Customer Service

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsThe company is very flexible with scheduling and when you ask for time off. Sometimes during the summer they do get a little more intimidating when asking for time off, but usually you are granted the time off you ask for.
Great place to work for your first job. I worked here for 6 years. Started out as a cart wrangler and made my way up to Customer Service. They watch their employees for signs of possible advancement.
When I was there, they gave you a raise every 5,000 hours you worked, so instead of getting a yearly raise with others who may not deserve it, you could almost determine when you got a raise.

ConsWhile this is a good job to work during school, they do take up your weekends for part-time workers who are usually students. As long as you can find a work/school balance, you will be fine.
If you work in Customer Service, there are times you have to stay and close which means your shift ends at midnight.

10 years with Kroger, none feel wasted.

Floor Supervisor & Customer Service (Current Employee)
    Cincinnati, OH

ProsGreat benefits, plenty of career opportunities, flexible hours.

ConsSlow salary increases, annoying customers, passive aggressive culture.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe less passive aggressive

    Great place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsThe people I work with and for are great. Excellent benefits and easy to move up in the company if you work hard.

ConsThe pay isn't great and they expect salaried employees to work 50 hours a week. It's retail, so many positions require you to work weekends and holidays.

Advice to Senior ManagementA work week should be 40 hours. More of a focus on work/life balance will result in happier and more productive employees.

ProsA decent amount of hours with good benefits.

ConsNot so great pay. Only a $.05 raise every 6 months.

    Greatest people to work with

    Utility Clerk (Former Employee)
    Canton, IL

ProsIve never worked with a better team of people. Very friendly and helpful. The management was amazing. I always enjoyed coming to work. And always kept a smile on my face. Also the management rewarded us for our hard work. We always got our breaks.

ConsHours can get pretty low. You work harder and still get less hours than the people who have been there just a little longer.

Advice to Senior ManagementBase hours on work, not favoritism but actual work.

Low pay for the amount of work expected, but numerous opportunities to advance.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsTremendous opportunity for advancement if you are willing to work hard and pursue additional education and/or skills; many different types of jobs and a nationwide company

ConsAt times, advancement can involve favoritism or "who you know" within the company. Pay is low considering the amount of work employees are expected to perform.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't micromanage, and don't only focus on the numbers. Remember, your employees are your "customers" as well; treat them as such. You are headed in the right direction, put trust in your employees and hold them accountable for the jobs they perform.
