Henry Ford would have done a better job running Rolls Royce than KNS has done running Orthodyne Electronics

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

I was hired on to work for Orthodyne Electronics in Irvine before they were bought out by KNS and the atmosphere then was great. A number of the people are still there and they are great people to work with. I enjoyed the OE people far more than I enjoyed the KNS people.

    Cons

KNS makes thousands of identical machines and doesn't care about customer service. They dominate their market by mass producing thousands of identical machines and thought they could "improve" OE by applying their techniques to a company that produces dozens of highly customized machines.

Henry Ford said you could get a Model T in any color you wanted as long as it was black. He made thousands of identical cars and people bought them. People also bought Rolls Royces though and they were made with the customer in mind. High performance, numerous options, great customer service...more than one color.

Orthodyne Electronics was the GOLD STANDARD in Wedge Bonding because of their top quality equipment and outstanding customer support. Under KNS the quality standards are non-existent and the customer no longer matters after the check has cleared.

It's a real shame what they've done to the once proud Orthodyne Electronics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

My advice to KNS management is to pull your heads out of your butts and realize that your way isn't the right way to run OE. They were the world leader in their field without you and they're on the verge of collapse under your rule. Have you ever heard the phrase "don't mess with a good thing." You messed with it; you're killing a once great company under the guise of synergy and efficiency...neither of which you are achieving.

I have been working at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Innovative technology. Some highly skilled technical staff remains though probably not for long.

    Cons

ZERO corporate culture. Poor morale. Decision making based on bottom line estimates that lack any kind of foresight, crippling the potential for future innovation and competitiveness. An inanimate CEO who cares only about increasing share prices in the short term instead of growing the company in a healthy and strategic manner. No younger generation of engineers (they're usually the first to get laid off).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actively participate with employees in the decision making process to earn trust. Be more transparent and upfront. Show strong leadership and be more decisive on every day decisions. Stop micro-managing, let middle management and task leaders do there jobs.

Poor Management in SG Took A Winner And Turned It Into A Loser

Former Employee - Engineering in Irvine, CA

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people in the Southern California location.
Great legacy products (Orthodyne wedge bonders)
    High-tech robotic systems
Fair severance package for those laid off
A loyal, good (yet shrinking) customer base

    Cons

Upper management at this site does not push back against a finance-centric corporate HQ in order to justify the local wedge-bond-specific business model and needs. Instead, the SoCal site is driven into the ground by number-crunchers who are thinking liquidation of the whole Irvine site will be more beneficial than injecting R&D and new product funding.

The specter of being laid off hangs like a dark cloud over the facility since the K&S takeover. There are massive waves of layoffs (retrenchment) and you never know when you are going to be next. ZERO job security. Rest assured, though, when they lay you off, they may call you back to be a TEMP with no benefits!

The quarterly bonus provided by the company is good money for the employees, but forces you to focus on your own projects instead of helping your colleagues. Does not foster teamwork in the workplace. Many individuals, no team effort - unless it puts money in my pocket at the same time.

Customers are a lower priority than shareholders.

Travel policy is ludicrous with the company taking weeks to pay back employees after a business trip. Employees in the USA are forced to use their personal credit cards for business travel.

The CEO earns at least $5 million per year. Why doesn't he take a 10% pay cut and save 5 to 8 jobs in Irvine that were alleviated "not because of performance, but instead due to business climate." I was willing to take a personal 10% pay cut to save others jobs during previous waves of K&S layoffs.

"People matter" is a core value of the company, yet the truth is that to K&S, people do not matter.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To the Singapore management team: Let the wedge bonder unit do what they do best and do not interfere. Should have left Orthodyne's business model alone, as it was not similar to the K&S business model.
To the Irvine local management team: Stand your ground against the top-level corporate management and lobby on behalf of your customers, products and employees. A ball bonder salesman is not going to want to sell wedge bonders - harder to sell and requires a much more complex level of knowledge of the machine/industry/applications.

    Pros

Good company as long as you are not fired rapidly. Jobs are well defined. Conducive environment to do ones job well.

    Cons

Meritocracy is in the dust bin. Silly people can climb up without any contribution. Recruitment and promotion is a farce. Preferred people only are given opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please don't take away employee benefits to increase the company bottom line. Please adhere to equal opportunity.

    Pros

    Work and life balance.
    Good salary with some benefits.

    Cons

Do not expect for a long term career as you may be surprised that tomorrow is your last day. Retrenchments, downsizing and shutdown are too frequent. If there is a new office or factory has just setup, extended or renovated recently, it might just disappear after a short period of time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please make better plans before making any decisions for hiring, setting up new offices or facilities.

I worked at Kulicke and Soffa as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

No stress, happy environment, good working hour with friendly staffs

    Cons

The worst thing is retrenchment. We didn't know when is our last day. Retrenchment is almost every year. And the thing I don't like about K&S is , I've no idea how they choose the people they want to retrench. No matter how hard work you're and how good you're, they still retrench u. And they left a few people and all of them are not so hardworking and always absent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The management team is totally not working. Their management system is sucks. Super Sucks. Please go and do some job to make it better.

I have been working at Kulicke and Soffa

    Pros

This is not a company you are hopping for. The top management are playing dirty game. The best of their game is silent and scapegoat the employee. Furthermore, the CFO is good for nothing. A lot of hidden things which they hide from external auditor. If you are not working there, you wont knonw.

    Cons

This is a company where whole team will leave at the same time and retrenchemnt almost every year. We dont even know that day is our last day and they treat us like criminal. Furthermore, you receive none or very little compensation after they are treating you badly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should fix internal problem first before you decided to grow the company. Credibility and reputation is important when we are talking about business. Unless you approve the company to overstate the profit by massaging the data which is not right and it is just creating an illusion to the market. Without the support from skillful and loyal employees, company can not go far too. We need two hands to clap. Appreciation and respect is important.

    Pros

Semiconductor industry experience and global business.

    Cons

Poor executive leadership team. Highly cyclical volatile industry. Unfair hiring practices and preference given to friends over merits. Constant lay-offs in the west as jobs being moved to Asia. Very high job insecurity due to hire-fire policy, cost pressures and business volatility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your act together. Integrity and strategic vision would help. CEO needs to stop bringing in old friends into the company and focus on hiring and retaining good people. All talk - No walk.
