I have been working at L Brands full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

My time with the company was during a lot of growth and development. Many people were promoted and a lot of focus was put on developing teams to the next level.

    Cons

I felt that during the recession things were difficult every where however it seemed as though the value of the employees really became non existent and it became a matter of watch your back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Go back to truly caring about your people,

Good Place to Work, if They Like You

I worked at L Brands full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Some great coworkers. The workload is not heavy, but not terrible. They offer flexible hours. Not a total cookie-cutter work environment; they'll let you be flexible with cross-functional partners to make workflow smoother. Benefits are pretty good, the 401k match is better than a lot of companies, but not amazing.

    Cons

There can be a lot of politics. Some of the high-level management can play favorites more severely than I've ever seen (if they love you, you can do no wrong; if they don't like you, they'll make your worklife miserable until you quit). I left for a better offer elsewhere, but I lost a lot of great coworkers due to upper-level mind games.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to which of your departments heads play favorites too heavily and rein them in. If people under a specific head keep leaving, look into why that's happening and fix it.

    Pros

Good culture for the most part. Reasonable compensation practices, and a thriving business (especially in Victoria's Secret)

    Cons

Can be a bit of a "who you know" system of promotion.

    I worked at L Brands

    Pros

Did project work and learned a lot during my time there. If you find a supporter in senior management your career takes off. Unfortunately for most people it's the opposite.

    Cons

A case of who you know, not what you know. Saw a lot of people promoted and fast tracked through because they had someone in upper management "walking" them through the ranks.
Operates on the "good ole boy" network. Not as diverse as they talk themselves up to be.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

People should be recognized for the work they do. You claim that your people resources are very important to your success, so make them feel that way. Open and fair communication practices would also be nice.

Former Employee - Assistant Designer - Contractor (Freelance) in New York, NY

    I worked at L Brands

    Pros

    Great Work Environment
    Associate Appreciation
    Successful brands (rewarding)
    Great learning experience
    Great management
Full time associates have amazing benefits package, growth opportunities, and many other perks

    Cons

Keep freelancers for YEARS without awarding them company discount or benefits
Long hours with no overtime and no paid personal days, sick days or holidays for freelancers
Freelancers do not have the same growth opportunities as full time associates but sometimes have the same or more daily responsibilities. Sometimes freelancers have even been managers of a department for YEARS before being hired full time.
This is a multi-billion-dollar company - they should be able to hire their long-term freelancers.
Very political - be careful who you trust and how you interact with others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire your freelancers after they've put in a full year or offer full benefits, sick days, 401K, promotion, etc. A successful company is one that values all of it's employees and gives incentives for all their hard work.

Good Start to a Career...but movement is a must

Former Employee - Operations Supervisor in Columbus, OH

    I worked at L Brands

    Pros

Good strategic direction, overall good leadership, smart, young, hip company. Work-life balance is fair, you get a significant number of PTO days from start. Discount is good if you are a female. Good place to start a career, get chance to learn a lot about the retail fashion industry.

    Cons

Lacking realistic long-term opportunities for high achieving individuals..."need to wait your turn" in a lot of situations. Dead-weight in many areas of the organization..."lifers" exist almost everywhere and are clogging up opportunities for younger, talented employees. Lacking pro-active approach to doing business, lots of reacting. Extremely seasonal industry, super busy during holiday season.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Develop way to speed up development, promotions, career opportunities for young, educated, high achieving folks, or they are going to walk....as many do.
