I have been working at LSI

    Pros

Easy to move positions. Pay is good and it's easy to take time off when you want. There are a number of grey beards in the company to learn from.

    Cons

Management is incapable of critiquing your work/skills and rarely knows what you do day to day unless you're "the person" that they go to for info. In my eight years with the company, they have never been able to provide anything worthwhile to the question "What can I do to improve". The usual answer is that you're doing great.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn how to critique employees and provide worthwhile feedback. You're management looks ineffective since they don't know what's going on and can't actually manage a person.

Ditch the PSU/RSU options, people don't want to be told "Here's your bonus that you'll get in 1 and 2 years if you stay with us but we reserve the right to adjust it before we give it to you". You're a large company with a large cash reserve that can offer cash bonuses.

Metrics also have gone from being useful to being a means to demotivate. Most want to get a job done, not spend part of the day just worrying about metrics.

Also, most of the India hires are dragging the company down. There are some great ones that I've consider it a pleasure to work with. Most of the others though are worse than new grads in the US. Take the lead from other companies and start pulling back and use India as a source for support/work on that side of the world rather than a unified US/India team.

For most of my long career, LSI was a great place to work. During the last 2 years (2007 - 2009), it became an difficult

    Pros

    Very good pay and benefits.

    Cons

Executive management will not allow challenges that may impact company risk or future success.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The stock price and market cap are good gauges for success over the long term. The past 5-6 years would show that decisions made were not respected by the market nor did they add value to shareholders. Admitting this and taking a different direction would be a good decision.

    Pros

people that work there are cool.

    Cons

management is terrible. they burn so many bridges and lose so many clients that your always switching to a new team. appraisers suck. its like baby sitting. these guys are supposed to be professionals and never turn in there reports bc lsi pays them so low that they are last on the list of things to do. then managers yell at you bc the reports arent in.

I have been working at LSI

    Pros

LSI allows virtual office work at home so you don't need to be there every day.
The people are fun and the work stress is low. and the best part is that the
    cafeteria is very good.

    Cons

Very few promotions - the job you get when you start is the only position you will ever have.
there are lots and lots of layoffs.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

get deeply and emotionally involved with the people by
getting hands dirty - learn the ropes - do the Undercover Boss thing.

I have been working at LSI

    Pros

LSI in Allentown is the old Bell Labs/Agere system and therfeore is renoonwed for a lot of technical innovation. Pay and benefits are great and never have had a pay cut. Promotion is fair and has parallel ladder for technical people. One a a few companies that have the pension system for old timer. You can get a monthly check of $2000/month after tax if you are above 50 and quit the company.

    Cons

Great technical company but poor marketing n. Company lost market share to Marvel and Broadcom. Company always think about periodic layoff to cut cost instead of growing revenue. After merging with LSI Logic, Allentown is no longer center of gravity. LSI likes to outsource manufacturing and engineering work to India and China. Morale is low and old people trie tos hang on to the job. The place relies on mass storage business to survive.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Grow revenue instead of cutting cost by outsourcing and layoff.

    I worked at LSI

    Pros

Flexible time, compensation is OK comparing to its peers.
Many CEOs in semi-conductor companies worked at LSI before.

    Cons

A lot of politics and bureaucracy. Managers do not know what they are doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Trust more on your working staffs instead of your get-lost mangers.
Provide a way to review your mangers by your staffs, not just top down.
    Do not lose your focus.

I have been working at LSI

    Pros

LSI currently has a very strong core group of engineers. I enjoyed working with every engineering group I encountered. I have a great deal of respect for the engineers that still are employed at LSI.

    Cons

LSI is in continual flux. Reorganizations followed by layoffs have been occurring consistently every 1-2 quarters. Many of the lost positions have been outsourced to India (Pune or Bangalore) or China (Shanghai). Morale is incredibly low and employees have very little trust in management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop treating employees in the US with so little respect. Two groups I have been involved with have faced major layoffs while their positions are outsourced to India and China. My division started the year with 16 facilities. We currently are now down to 6 facilities and only two of those are left in the United States. This is a constant drain on morale and it leads to severe trust issues with senior management.
