I have been working at La Madeleine full-time for less than a year

    Pros

New cafe openings offer plenty of room for advancement, good benefits, work life balance, and corporate is very supportive.

    Cons

Plenty of room for advancement but that depends on the person.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The company is progressive and I like the direction it's headed. Keep taking care of people and the business!

I have been working at La Madeleine full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Positive working environment where it feels your input matters. Good benefits to include medical, dental, vision and 401k. Seems to be promotional opportunities and room for growth within organization. Leadership is involved and has a passion for the concept. Understanding of work/life balance. Fantastic 50% discount!

    Cons

Due to the rate the company is growing there are growing pains associated with getting processes streamlined and most efficient. I feel this will eventually work itself out.

I have been working at La Madeleine full-time

    Pros

pay comes on time but its not enough to survive

    Cons

horrible pay, you can not pay your bills with this plus they only give you about 30-33 hrs a week. management just cares about how much the store made that day, they will cut your hours so they can save money, be rude, get into arguments. The busboy at my location told our GM he was getting burned by the washing chemicals and she told him there was nothing she could do. He asked her repeatedly to get him some gloves, she said no and he ended up buying his own on his 8/hr budget. She knew he was a recent immigrant by himself and she gave no cares.

I have been working at La Madeleine part-time for less than a year

    Pros

I do not find many pros besides the people I work with are generally nice. Customers are ok, the managers sometimes will bring pizza.

    Cons

You will go home smelling like soup and other various food items. Work becomes monotonous quickly and raises are not often. It is not a place to stay and work for a while.

I have been working at La Madeleine part-time for less than a year

    Pros

The quality of the food is high. There is seldom a dull moment, and the fast pace makes the time fly by.

    Cons

I find it bizarre that for a shift of anything less than 8 hours I can assume I will not get even a 5-minute break.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Show more respect to the employees.

I have been working at La Madeleine

    Pros

They work hard on keeping there food cost low and never letting anything go bad. They are working on making there food production cost low.

    Cons

They do not care about there employees. they have lost the quaintness that at one time made them such an attractive an innovative company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They need to work on getting advice back form there employees. They need to take a look at what kind of people they are hiring, this in and of it self is there number one down fall.

I have been working at La Madeleine

    Pros

Got a free entree every day. Could take home a loaf of bread a day.
Generally treated well by the public. Quiet workplace.

    Cons

Not all co-workers know how to behave in a quasi-upscale environment. You don't yell, you don't play grab-ass, you don't talk street hustla smack. Mgmnt really should quash that.

Regardless of appearances, most of the baking in done centrally and trucked to the stores. The stuff that IS cooked in the stores is basically thawed and popped in a convection oven.

The cons of working at LM are largely those of working food service in general: working weekends and holidays, closing one night and opening the next morning, flakey co-workers.

After Patrick sold the company (to El Chico?) it kinda lost its soul. :-(

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If mgmnt is going to play the "that's not how it's done in France" card it would be neat if they, you know, had ever been there. I have more time in French bakeries and bistros than any LM manager I've met to date.

But here's the big thing: LM gets away with the prices it charges because of the PERCEPTION of an upscale environment and food. Anything that detracts from this perception will cause customers to realize they just spent a non-trivial amount of cash on fluff.

You MUST keep the coffee, caesar salad, and bread up to snuff. Everything else can come and go.

I have been working at La Madeleine

    Pros

The more of yourself that you invest in the company, the more you will enjoy the job. There is room for growth and certainly opportunities for challenge. You WILL stand out and be noticed if you have the self discipline to stay motivated regardless of those with whom you work.

    Cons

Often the criticism of peers and superiors outpaces the number of times praise is received. I have received pay increases steadily for five years and I view those raises as non-verbal praise. However, the "well done!" comes far too infrequently.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Middle and upper management is quite adept at communicating with fair and honest criticism and feedback. However, it would serve them well to give verbal praise more often.

I have been working at La Madeleine

    Pros

Some of the customers are incredibly nice, and every so often you happen upon a manager who know how to respect the employees.

    Cons

The pay is very bad even for a medial job, and there is no health benefits (unless you cut your hand off or something like that). Also, the management in general does not know how to treat the employees. The managers sit in the back and dont to anything to help, even when the employees in the front of the house need it (when we get a rush of people).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try and create a sense of unity not only between employees, but between employees and management. It may take a little effort or money, but it would really make us more enthusiastic to come to work.
