I have been working at Lam Research full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

High market share and Bay Area location are fantastic pluses for this company. This company has been around for a while so the employees are hardened veterans of the business cycles. There is also a shuttle that goes to the Livermore campus which helps with work/life balance.

    Cons

There is no way to take time off as the work load is too high. Taking time off is frowned upon by management. The salary and perks are way below average for the Bay Area. A new grad getting 120k plus 30k in signing bonus and relocation seems excessive to some but below average needed for a family starting out. Other companies pay north of 150k plus 100%+ in incentives.

I worked at Lam Research full-time

    Pros

    1. Customer interfacing experience
    2. Learn semi cap equipment industry and technology trends

    Cons

In one line- Leave Analytical Mind (LAM)

    1. No interest in advancing technology
    2. Politically driven interests
    3. Personal interests first
    4. Strongly believe in long hours with absolutely no thinking or logical approach: believes in data collection over data analysis
    5. Falsified notion of "customer is God, and local accounts team is God"

The logo calls for "Customer, Company and Employee". As a matter of fact, it works the other way around. But who doesn't. As an individual, if I cannot focus on myself (my performance, my growth, my career, my future)- how can I contribute for the company and hence the customer? Company calls for socialism (or can I say communism) in a capitalist competition..., However, reality is, in this company- from Manager--> VP, its all about themselves and convincing the food chain on their mere existence in the company.

In regards to considering Lam as their next potential employee:
I cannot advice senior engineers or managers on their choice, I would assume they are more informed.
For new college grads- stay away from this company. Its OK to wait and pick the right one.

    Pros

Lam had a cafe on site.

    Cons

Too many to list but number one was one hand never knew what was going on and the other didn't care. Not all management but most were Proctologist doing brain surgery. My manager was a complete Bully and did not like me cause he did not hire me.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

They can't hear and they don't read lips, so nothing.

    Pros

Company was good to employees (outside of HR) and provides good salary and benefits. 2 year stock vesting was good. Company is old fashioned but trying to update, slowly...

    Cons

HR organization has significant leadership problems, high turnover, and make unreasonable and unachievable demands on HR employees. HR management throws their own employees under the bus with every mistake. Very demoralizing work environment.

No gym. Cubes and workspaces are very outdated, cafes are small

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You are losing good people in HR due to the management and the high turnover.

I worked at Lam Research full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

When working in a clean room, there is no dirty work.

    Cons

Managers are hired from below instead of based on education. This means that good techs or engineers become bad managers. Lam is also a cut-throat environment. The best way to get ahead is to throw another employee under the bus. HR tends to side with those at fault in conflicts in order to avert a confrontation. Breaks aren't long enough to go to the bathroom and lunches aren't long enough to eat, due to gowning/de-gowning counting toward break times. Management tends to yell instead of calmly discussing issues. Management does as they please and work whatever schedule they feel like, but hypocritically enforce strict policies on lower employees.

I have been working at Lam Research as a contractor (less than a year)

    Pros

Commute was great , cafe nice.

    Cons

The challenge is the technology, and the work groups. I worked contract among many
perm employees who for the most part don't know how lucky they were. Training was not
available, and documentation was lacking. Mgmt was not involved in day to day operations.
Office had a musty smell, from leftover food left in garbage in common areas..

    Pros

Long hours. Challenging work environment. Always busy. Corporate goals come first before the employees. Cyclical industry keeps you on your toes. Some long-term employees like to use acronyms, jargon and 4 syllable words to keep everyone guessing what they are saying and not sying.

    Cons

Low salary. Internal politics. No internal opportunities. Smelly cubicles and horrible temperature except for building 4.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Try to keep qualified staff.

    Pros

Nice place to work if you like to do process engineering because there's so much work.

    Cons

Highly political. High level executives have no idea what lower level executives/managers are doing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Martin: You are the only one standing between this place going to hell. There has to be some you you can improve middle management.

I have been working at Lam Research

    Pros

Probably better than Applied Materials for now. Lam has dominant market share in etch, which means that when the industry is in an upturn - times are good and there are no layoffs.

    Cons

Managers, who are former enigneers, lack people skills. They do not have the ability to communicate to the people they manager nor appreciate the hard work they put in. Recent changes from human resources regarding compensation have decreased morale. Gone are the days of Lam being a great place to work. Hello Applied Materials 2.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I think you forgot how Lam Research became the sucess it was. Success should be shared by everyone not just a select few. It's not too late to correct the mistakes.

    Pros

Pay is above average in the industry though not the best. Good benefits.
Good plasma ecthing technology, this is somethink one would like dispite too many cons.

    Cons

-Primarily Single product company, possibly sink in case competitor innovate.
-Highly political environment, you spent more time watchin back than doing engineering work.
-Process/product engineering job hijacks life and significantly impact work life balance.
-Good work is rarely appriciated unless you are in close political circle.
-To many middle managers ( Sr engineers manageing Sr engineers!!) doesnt let clear vision go to engineers level.
    -

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

good engineer is not always a good manager, consider this during promotions.
Though senior leadership is extremely smart , yet not effective because of middle man ( middle manager)
