Former Employee - Production Intern in Emeryville, CA

I worked at LeapFrog as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

This was a helpful introduction to production in an industry I am interested in.

    Cons

Many of the hard skills related to proprietary software and they were not very transferrable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to the ideas of interns! I had a bunch of ideas when I was an intern that later hit the market for companies like Mattel. These were ideas like creating physical toys to play on iPad screens or creating a plushy smart case to house iPad, which comes with a companion app for that plushy. Don't write off the ideas of interns because they are new to the industry. They have insight that tenured employees will remain oblivious to.

    Overall a great experience

I worked at LeapFrog as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

Passionate people, relaxed but motivated environment, smart people. Overall it was a fun place to intern. Got to work on a prototype with other interns from other departments, as well as projects for internal software development

    Cons

Nothing too much here. Most people have been at LeapFrog for a very long time. While that shows the company takes care of their employees, it isn't the optimal place to find other young developers out of college.

I have been working at LeapFrog

    Pros

Really great content for kids, lots of very intelligent people on the content side. People really care about what they're doing here; the reviews that say it's not a great place to be if you're interested in career advancement aren't accurate with regards to anything outside of IT.

    Cons

A little top heavy, structurally. Lots of executive oversight. Departments don't always know what other departments are doing; a more collaborative environment would be better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A more collaborative process between departments would be more beneficial to the company. Most departments have no idea what most other departments even do.

    Pros

Creative company, motivated by learning goals

    Cons

High volume production on tight timelines, not a lot of diversity in product line so not as competitive in industry

    Pros

Exciting, highly collaborative environment with passionate and talented people. Strong corporate mission of helping children achieve their potential. Individuals at all levels can have a strong, direct impact on the business.

    Cons

Employees are often overwhelmed with the number of priorities placed on them. Company is expected to outperform itself year after year, even in a volatile industry, which leads to a tendency to try to do too much with very few resources (skeleton staffs, low budgets).

    Pros

    Passionate people at the office.

    Cons

Not following through with processes make extra work for everyone.

Some favoritism does come into play.

Most employees have old computers/laptops and they spend more time getting it fixed than productiveness.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Reward some of the hard working longtime employees

I have been working at LeapFrog full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    - There are talented and motivated people cross all departments
    - Friendly, open, and cooperative culture (in general)
    - The products are amazing
    - If treated properly, could become an even stronger company that others cannot easily replicate

    Cons

    - Overly aggressive development schedules increase the risk and potentially lower the quality of the products
    - Management is too focused on marketing instead of quality of the products

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    - Senior management need pay attention to overall direction instead of implementation details. Mid and lower management need to be empowered to figure out the best way to reach the overall goal.
    - Encourage individual creativity. Avoid micro-managing.
    - Promote cooperative and entrepreneurial culture.
    - Work on attracting and retaining talented people.

    Bay Area location

    Cons

Typical disconnect between upper level and lower.

I have been working at LeapFrog

    Pros

Small company that has potential for future growth. Products we make are making a difference in peoples lives. Since it's a small company, your work is noticed, for better or for worse.

    Cons

You can't ever miss a beat, it's fast paced and the company is REALLY depending on you to perform. Many people who have been with the company for a long time seem to have great job security even though their work effort is greatly reduced. It's a marketing company first, engineering company 2nd (maybe 3rd...4th...). Engineering does not receive the recognition and budgeting that it deserves which causes products to have high potential but poor execution.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to thin out on the under performers and better recognize over achievers, especially outside of the sales and marketing team, the engineering team is where the products come from, yet they never receive company wide recognition for their work, while people who secured a deal with Target seem to be well thanked, remember there would be no deal to make if engineering had not come through.
