I worked at Legg Mason full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

    Interesting work, interesting people.

    Cons

Unstable, inconsistent and uninspiring leadership. Inter-affiliate politics is stifling and the troops lack of respect for upper management leaves the firm rowing in circles.

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

Simple/light workload, apathy in the office leads to a haven for underacheivers

    Cons

Salary well below industry standards, confused management, archaic procedures, extreme office politics/bureaucracy at hand.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop reacting to random, intangible one-off events and take an educated initiative to solve problems. With all the executive rhetoric about being "best in class," we should be focused more on actually rewarding/compensating talent, rather than trying to improve margins by settling for mediocrity.

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

The benefits are about standard and they did give yearly increases when the company was struggling, albeit very small it was still better than nothing.

    Cons

Little to no opportunity for advancement or training. Lack of integrity in Executive management and Board of Directors (6 months after laying-off 500+ people and 3 months after giving promotions without pay increases the Executives received 7 digit bonuses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take care of your employees! Hire a Co-CEO with the experience to run all aspects of the company. Someone that people are willing to follow.

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

Very open environment. Great entry point. but....

    Cons

No ladder to climb. Virtually no lateral movement either.
Senior management seems very disinterested in lower level employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

HR website needs to be revamped. Virtually no movement is available for employees.
    Communication needs vast improvement.

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

The medical benefits and corporate perks were helpful.Benefits

    Cons

Lack of cohesion in low to mid level management. Lack of professionalism and closed-off to new ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Transparency, professional training, annually mandated management courses provided by Human Resource consultants (not in-house staff repeating from a manual).

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

    Great people, flexible work schedules.
Access to a global network that offers new ideas and new perspectives.

    Cons

Don't get a sense of strategy or plans to move forward, except to lay off employees. This creates a negative morale loop where people no longer want to make an effort as it's not appreciated, and therefore results don't materialize.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to make changes where changes are necessary.

Former Employee - Anonymous Employee in London, England (UK)

I worked at Legg Mason full-time

    Pros

Very nice people at the London Office
Exposure to Global Mutual Fund distribution

    Cons

Poor communication and management by the US office since re-structure of London operations
Extremely understaffed with certain teams working late nights and weekends
Lack of experience by US office in managing the International business
Poor client service by US office in servicing the International business
Lack of basic investment knowledge by certain US offices
Efforts by US staff in being extra nice to London staff comes across as unsincere and at times insulting given their actions and results do not match their nice promisses.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

International Offices and bugedts need to be managed and lead by local professionals not US based ones.
US professionals need to carry degrees in finance or be made to acquire an equivalent financial certification in order to close the gap with their counterparties in the International offices.

    I worked at Legg Mason

    Pros

good salary and benefits for the financial industry
lot of good employees who try hard to do their job properly

    Cons

poor planning or foresight - direction of operations not thoroughly thought out
    not very adaptable to change
    lack of overall teamwork

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

management needs to do a more creditable job of communicating with employees and not just talking about transparency - employees need to believe waht they hear

    A Sinking Ship

    Current Employee - Anonymous Employee

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

Bright minds at the investment level
    Bonuses

    Cons

Layoffs occurred about a year ago and still struggling. It's like a sinking ship...a pirate ship at that, everyone is out for themselves. There is no transparency whatsoever. CEO made a slip right around layoffs when he was in Asia during an employee town hall/conf. call, "what is this I'm eating, lobster?"
There are some people that are just not bright and you wonder how they ended up there.
Lots of red tape...no resources to get the job done.
    No encouragement with work/life balance.
They recently got rid of the 12 weeks paid maternity leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Step up your game. Stop resorting to the good ole' boy's club. Embrace diversity. Embrace workplace flexibility.
