I worked at Legg Mason as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Friendly people, great reputation in the area

    Cons

The work atmosphere was very relaxed and some of the employees slacked off and would rarely work the standard 8 hour days and would take off one or two days a week to "work from home"

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Change the corporate culture to one of harder working employees

I worked at Legg Mason full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people to work with, ability to work from home at least once a week, positive growth.

    Cons

Successive lay-offs created a negative work environment. People stopped working together and conflicts formed within work teams. Management had no direction. They were too focused on meeting a project deadline/milestone instead of rolling out a quality end-product.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value and utilize the strengths of the individuals on your team. Create a positive work environment especially during a time of economic uncertainty. Foster positive work relationships with other teams.

    I worked at Legg Mason

    Pros

Legg Mason is a smaller corporate center that has outsourced responsibility to its investment affiliates and others. This has resulted in a more efficient corporate center that is focused on distribution and risk reduction activities. Individuals with relationship building skills are greatly valued.

    Cons

Direction of the firm seems less certain. Entrepreneurial skills that were extremely valued in the 90’s and 00’s have become less important.

    I worked at Legg Mason

    Pros

I got to work with a lot of intelligent people that are hard working. I was able to learn a lot at my time there.

    Cons

Challenging because of the hard times the company had. The company at the time was going through many changes that made it hard to work..

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The leadership at Legg Mason was very senior, but was lacking the ability to really inspire employees.

I have been working at Legg Mason

    Pros

Good corporate culture, diversified business with many moving parts, and family business foundation which can still be seen there today.

    Cons

Constant changes at the upper management layers, difficult reemergence out of the recession, and some uncertain future prospects with a rogue investor on the board.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More transparency where possible, better career development tools and opportunities, and better knowledge management from the top down through the entry level positions.
