    Relaxed work atmosphere

    Intern (Former Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsFriendly people, great reputation in the area

ConsThe work atmosphere was very relaxed and some of the employees slacked off and would rarely work the standard 8 hour days and would take off one or two days a week to "work from home"

Advice to Senior ManagementChange the corporate culture to one of harder working employees

ProsGreat people to work with, ability to work from home at least once a week, positive growth.

ConsSuccessive lay-offs created a negative work environment. People stopped working together and conflicts formed within work teams. Management had no direction. They were too focused on meeting a project deadline/milestone instead of rolling out a quality end-product.

Advice to Senior ManagementValue and utilize the strengths of the individuals on your team. Create a positive work environment especially during a time of economic uncertainty. Foster positive work relationships with other teams.

Early years of growth were exciting, later years of consolidation were difficult but we were treated with respect

ProsLegg Mason is a smaller corporate center that has outsourced responsibility to its investment affiliates and others. This has resulted in a more efficient corporate center that is focused on distribution and risk reduction activities. Individuals with relationship building skills are greatly valued.

ConsDirection of the firm seems less certain. Entrepreneurial skills that were extremely valued in the 90’s and 00’s have become less important.

People are nicer comparing to other buy side shops.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsHistory legacy; big organization with large network; strong sales pipeline; culture is not that aggressive comparing to other shops; nice work environment.

ConsSluggish recovery from the recession; doubtful organization structure; sometimes people could be too laid-back. Location might not be as desirable as other firms. Not strong internationally.

Advice to Senior ManagementOverall a nice place to work for mid-career people. Could develop good relationship with co-workers for future career development opportunity.

ProsI got to work with a lot of intelligent people that are hard working. I was able to learn a lot at my time there.

ConsChallenging because of the hard times the company had. The company at the time was going through many changes that made it hard to work..

Advice to Senior ManagementThe leadership at Legg Mason was very senior, but was lacking the ability to really inspire employees.

    Good learning experience

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsGood corporate culture, diversified business with many moving parts, and family business foundation which can still be seen there today.

ConsConstant changes at the upper management layers, difficult reemergence out of the recession, and some uncertain future prospects with a rogue investor on the board.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore transparency where possible, better career development tools and opportunities, and better knowledge management from the top down through the entry level positions.

ProsColleagues are very friendly and nice.

ConsOne of the largest asset management firms in the US, but also has one of the largest overhead costs compared to other competitors.

Advice to Senior ManagementDecrease the overhead costs.

    Good place to work.

    Developer (Former Employee)
    Baltimore, MD

ProsI didn't work there long, but the people I got to meet there were really great to work with. The out-of-college training program they have you go through is a bit bogus, but its a nice way to break up the day. Overall the pay was good and the job was interesting.

ConsLike I said, the training program is a bit bogus. Other than that, the job was pretty decent. Sometimes supporting financial organizations in IT can be pretty demanding, especially with clients in other countries.

Advice to Senior ManagementNot to beat a dead horse here, but get rid of the trainee program or make it more useful. It would also be nice to have more work across teams (at least in IT).
