A lot of wonderful, talented people work there, but leadership is inconsistent.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time

ProsGood benefits, including some telecommuting opportunities and allowances for paying bar dues (if you're a lawyer), office supplies (if you're home based), etc. Good work-life balance, and there are some very talented, collaborative, engaging people working in all areas.

ConsBusiness needs and strategies change frequently, so it's difficult to plan or get momentum going. Also, budgets can change suddenly. The focus on professional growth at times seems more like lip-service.

Great experience.

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than 5 years

ProsIntelligent co-workers and important business purpose make the work satisfying. Good benefits and pay as well as employee engagement initiatives.

ConsConstant budget challenges force departments to continually re-evaluate staffing instead of focusing on the business. You need to expect this if you accept a role.

Great company to work for. A lot of flexibility offered to employees. Restructuring is hard to keep up with.

Legal Project Editor (Former Employee)

I worked at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than 3 years

ProsTime-off is better than most companies and there is a developed training system in place

ConsCompensation is not the best

Great Law Student Work

LexisNexis Student Representative (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional part-time for more than a year

ProsDecent pay for the effort required, very flexible hours, great way to meet your fellow student, people rely on you for help with research. This job was a wonderful addendum to being on law review. Because we sat in the library and did nothing for hours, I used the time to get school work done. I tried to get students to ask me questions, but they rarely did. Still, I'm considered a "Lexis" expert on campus and students still e-mail or find me when they need help.

ConsNot a full time job, no bonuses or point opportunities, we could do so much more than just sit in a library and wait for students to come to us.

Advice to Senior ManagementUse your student reps more.

Great people and products but typical large company corporate situation

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than a year

ProsI had the pleasure to work with some great people. All professional, approachable and invested in our project.

Benefits and culture were great but compensation is average at best.

The project I was on was up to speed on adopting scrum and solid development practice. It was a great learning experience and it shows in the quality of the products.

ConsTypical corporate decision making with little regard to what really works vs managerial agendas.

Productive teams have been broken up and most given their walking papers all for the sake of centralizing development in Cary, NC for some grand modular development experiment.

Advice to Senior ManagementGood luck, hopefully the new direction in development will not tarnish the products out in the market place.

All the benefits and challenges of a large company.

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time

ProsHome based employees have a lot of flexibility. Most of the workforce in CA is home based. Free access to data resources for employees and great people across the board.

ConsGrowth is by acquisition which makes for a very fragmented workplace. Career growth is very difficult as the company consolidates in locations mostly on the east coast. Unless you're interested in Sales, it can be very challenging to have development and advancement.

Advice to Senior ManagementCulture is not just words - the management needs to give incentives to really drive the culture in the direction desired.

Great work/life balance

Coordinating Editor (Current Employee)
San Francisco, CA

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than 5 years

ProsFlexible working hours, work/life balance, volunteering opportunities, lateral career moves possible, secondments, training encouraged, relocation available.

ConsEditorial employees' salaries seem to be average or below average. Huge company, employees don't always have enough information, inevitable bureaucracy.

Regaining Foothold

Account Executive (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than 5 years

ProsI am a home based employee that works in Sales. I have an incredible work/life balance, the pay is good, the benefits are good and I work with great people. Westlaw beat us to market with their new website and we've been scrambling to play catch up. 2011, 2012 and 2013 have presented some challenges. But we have caught up to Westlaw and now have a comparable product. And as we continue to make acquisitions and innovate, the company continues to do well.

ConsIt's frustrating working for the company that wants to be #1 but faces an uphill battle against a very capable competitor. Westlaw is a good company that offers a great product and is very competitive with Lexis. So it's a constant battle to try and win customers.

Additionally, many parts of the company are flat. There aren't opportunities for upward growth in certain divisions so you have to go to other parts of the company if you want to move your career forward. That's what I'm being forced to do. But if you understand that coming into the job with Lexis, it's not a big deal. Some people are happy doing the same job for 10 or 15 years. The pay is good and if you enjoy the work, it's not a problem. But if you want to advance your career, you have to be open to moving around the company and potentially the country.

A great team, an exciting product, and a company that is improving for employees and customers.

Software Engineer (Current Employee)
Cary, NC

I have been working at LexisNexis Legal & Professional full-time for more than 5 years

Pros- We stay fairly on top of technology
- Great coworkers, I've never such a tight knit team before
- Fun but fast paced culture
- Improving product and platform vision over time

Cons- Some middle managers feel a bit too much like used car salesmen
- Sometimes a little too focused on cost cutting
- Business side can overcommit team without them knowing and often go for the quick wins over long term wins
- Still a bit blind on issues of employees, but trending for the better

Advice to Senior ManagementI would hold all levels of management more accountable for the performance and happiness of their teams.
