I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance as a contractor for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great opportunities to personally impact the companies growth.
Highly developed analytics practise with market leading technology.
Managers are well trained to recognize and reward good work.

    Cons

The office culture is too conservative. I agree with dressing professionally but am not pleased with the mandatory suit and tie policy. It's just superficial.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider loosening up on legacy policies, allow employees to work from home if that's what they prefer.

    Pros

Great people to work with. I enjoy the fact that it is a larger company and you can move horizontally. It is great to start out.

    Cons

Slow movement. A lot of people are lifers here and it can get pretty clogged at upper management levels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    move around a bit

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Solid company, industry leader, but experiencing growing pains as the business has been exploding! Overall very positive company culture and atmosphere, employees are valued, room for professional growth.

    Cons

In general, it's a great place to work, with lots of great, talented people. However, individual supervisors can crush work group morale and micromanage to death. With a pattern of explosive growth over the past several years, information sharing is a key to success, but a micromanager who keeps information from the team can make it a very difficult place to be day after day. This is not unlike other corporate offices: the direct supervisor makes ALL the difference.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management needs to help supervising managers handle their jobs better and respect their teams abilities, rather than just moving the problem manager to a different department.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Challenging work, mostly friendly people, definitely not full of Type-A step over your dead carcass type. Lots of different disciplines and business units to choose from. Benefits are pretty standard but the pension and generous FTO are great!

    Cons

Company is slow to remove poor performers and that creates burden on others.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Good benefits, pension (rare these days), and employee recognition system. Management level and above have flexibility to work from home.

    Cons

Some internal politics, primarily a cubicle environment, company is (understandably) risk-averse to the point where things like an on-site workout facility is thought to be too risky.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management has recently changed, and some of the things I liked about the company are also changing. I would advise not to change for the sake of change. Even the most cost-effective decision can have unintended negative consequences.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If your manager is right, personal growth can be phenomenal. Its best to shop around for the right manager and disregard things like commute, pay, job fit. Honesty having the right manager makes all the difference.

    Cons

Leadership almost always comes from the ground up. Its best to disregard certain individuals despite title and stick to your best judgement. If direct answers are not received, then fill in your best answer and set a time frame. Careers here are not for the faint of heart, but this is something you'll learn as you go. Avoid consultants at all costs.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time for more than a year

    Pros

An abundance of great opportunities at the bottom, supportive and responsive supervisors and managers. Straight forward and open compensation strategy.

    Cons

I have not experienced any to date. There are of course the normal elements of any large organization but nothing that sticks out or has been a significant hurdle.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Let's be the first major corporation to design a compensation package at the executive level that ends the companies financial liability to executives when they leave. The image of a few getting million dollar annual exit packages while pensions for the rank and file are constantly cutback should is a problem worthy of a solution
