I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Very competitive salary, excellent vacation policy and a robust benefits package. The people here are smart, bright and professional individuals (in my organization at least). A lot of tenured folks; some have been here for 20+, 30+ years, which has somewhat of a correlation to how much they enjoy their work. I have worked for a number of world-class companies, but by far, Liberty Mutual has been my favorite. My boss is great, I love my co-workers and the opportunities worldwide are endless.

    Cons

Liberty Mutual has been in business for ages, and some of that conservative culture is apparent. Though recently, they have been pushing out initiatives to change that. Business suits are no longer mandatory in their Boston headquarters, paid maternal/paternal leave just got introduced, work from home schedules are being piloted and we now have casual Fridays. One area of improvement would be work/life balance for some departments. My observation is that some functions have a harder time managing their work or being able to take all the time off that Liberty offers. Like other conglomerates, changes take time here. There is a lot of red tape. If you are coming from a smaller firm or a start-up, the pace of change can frustrate you.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing what you are doing. Continue onwards with your strengths, and improve on areas that need addressed per the employee opinion surveys.

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time

    Pros

Strong senior leadership team with clear vision. As a company, LMI communicates well with the employee population and really cares about serving the communities where they are located whether through service projects like Serve with Liberty or through annual giving. The primary core value for LMI is "Do the Right Thing" and this is NOT just lip service - it's true. Employees at all levels care deeply about doing the right thing whether it be for the company, their organization, their community or their home. Development is also very important at LMI. Managers are provided with a lot of training around helping their employees develop skills and expertise to make it to the next level. As with any organization, there will be managers who do not do this or who do it half-heartedly to just "check a box," but this is not the norm. LMI is serious about acquiring and maintaining top talent.

    Cons

LMI is a great company with a lot of very smart people who are all working very hard. This can sometimes translate into long hours and not a lot of work/life balance. The positive side the company is really trying to address this concern. Work/life balance was a key issue in the employee opinion survey and in response, HR implemented flexible work policies allowing employees to have discussions with their managers about a variety of work options. While this is becoming an industry standard, it's important to recognize that LMI took feedback to heart and took action. LMI is a company that listens. That's rare. My only other negative is similar to most companies out there - the benefits/health insurance. Retirement plan is great and financial compensation is stellar, but the health insurance is lacking.

    Advice to Management

Continue listening to employees and continue the frequent communications. It helps and makes a huge difference to your teams. Also, consider updating the health insurance. Insurance is a HUGE factor when deciding on a job and you don't want to lose talent because of the poor health insurance. Finally, consider having corporate office branches in other areas besides New England. This would be helpful in attracting and retaining top talent.

I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Fantastic career growth - One of the best salary and total comp packages of any Fortune 500 in Boston (salaries listed on job postings) - Great corporate culture - Great job stability - Fantastic work/life balance

    Cons

    - Can be slow moving at times with technology and other enhancements - Management can be somewhat out of touch with lower level employees - Doesn't carry the same weight on a resume as some of the more glamorous tech and finance companies

    Advice to Management

Continue to focus on career growth and employee development. Communicate better with lower level employees, especially those with close relationships to the customer/business partners.

    Pros

Great people, treat employees well, growing, believe in work life balance. I've worked at lots of other companies - impressed by the company's culture and core values. The average tenure at the company is about 9 years - people work here and stay.

    Cons

Medical coverage is just okay and expensive. Pay is good but average.

    Advice to Management

Keep focusing on the customer and caring about your employees - it makes a real competitive difference.
