I have been working at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    A lot of vacation time

    Cons

Micromanaging is to the extreme, its a CALL CENTER so don't be fooled, unrealistic goals to obtain, hard to take off during the holidays because they need people on the phones taking calls, you will know MORE than your manager, they pick on people & try to fire them, & they block you from moving to another position

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The call center atmosphere does not work for claims & STOP micromanaging your employees

    Awful Operation in Colombia

    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance

    Pros

-It pays good compared to Colombian insurance companies.
    -Good annual bonus
-Good online training program for employees

    Cons

The headquarters in Boston is completely unattached to the operation in Colombia. The CEO of the Colombian operation (Mauricio Garcia) has been in charge for 15 years now and could not be more comfortable in his throne. The technical and commercial areas ar at a constant war because the former is only measured by claims and the latter is measured by sales and claims. This sums up to a corrupt working environment in the sales areas where employees often violate company rules to be able to close deals. Sales pressure is inmense and there is little support from directives. Other US insurance companies wit operations in Colombia pay even better and have much better work enviroments. I know this first hand because I'm a former AIG employee.

The company has made several mistakes updating its online platform and is currently a technological dinosaur compared to all the other companies. Things are still done the old fashion way, like in the 1980s. All policies have to be printed in the company and are sent physically to brokers or clients. This makes sales very difficult in most cases.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Make the CEO (Mauricio Garcia) aware that he works for a US company and that he can be replaced at any moment. He is running the operation as if it was his backyard. Bring people in from headquarters to work in Colombia so they can get a feel of things and report them directly. I kno Liberty Mutual is a very good company and employer but it's Colombian operation is unwearthy of carrying the Liberty name.

    Pros

10 minutes from home, salary and benefits

    Cons

Senior Manager harassment, bullying, controlling and an HR Department that has no idea how to handle a lay off situation and severance

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Controlling, harassing and bullying your employees is not going to make them work more or harder for you. Coming from a Prison as a Corrections Officer and then managing in an office building are TWO different jobs. I think Liberty Mutual needs to do more research before hiring Senior Management. We are not prisoners so therefore we should not be treated as such. As far ash the head of HR and you hiring of HR employees, please teach them how to respond to questions about severance, benefits and 401K plans. Make sure they provide the employees with the correct information when we receive FTO and last pay check. I was previously laid off by Travelers and they handled their employees with much more care and compassion then Liberty Mutual could ever have done. I would never recommend this company to anyone to work for!!!

I worked at Liberty Mutual Insurance full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company is way over-staffed especially in the IT department and people have to literally beg to get on any project. They would literally give you work that's not even software developer work because they don't have anything else to give you. Why is this good? Cause you will have a lot of free time while getting paid.
Most people in Boston reports to a manager who sits in Indianapolis, NH, Ohio or Wausau (do you know where Wausau is?) or middle of nowhere. Chances are your manager probably won't be sitting in the same location meaning you get to come and go as you please or even not show up in office. The Boston office was literally empty most of the time because everyone just decides to work from home w/o telling their bosses as coming to the office is meaningless when your team isn't there.
A Great place for people who wants to do nothing and keeps collecting checks.
Company also has this great TDP program that takes any fresh college grad and turns him/her into a manager in 4 years. Tells you how much they value young talent. So all you Zuckerbergs out there, this is a great place for you to work.
The company does have boat loads of money so lay offs probably won’t happen soon.

    Cons

The management is as incompetent as you will see in any other place. I was hired as part of the Boston IT expansion back in 2011. The real story was the company had received a significant tax advantage from the government for their new building in Boston back bay area and in return the company promised to hire x number of people in Massachusetts. Turns out the company was just hiring anyone who fits the profile but then there was no plan for these new hires to be part of anything. I was one of those lucky ones who got hired. So what ended up happening was an army of Boston IT new hires sat around for months and months doing nothing. We kept asking our manager, who was also a new hired himself, to ask other groups for more work. He had to fly to the Indianapolis office where the groups there own all the projects and begged for work. All he got was a project that had all the developers do SA work. And then after enough complains from the new hires in Boston, the senior director from Indianapolis finally came over, sat down with us and told us we should be happy that we are on the bench and still being paid. So the message was cleared, there was no plan for us.
Incompetency in the IT leaderships. Have you ever seen a software architect who barely knows how to code or know nothing about computer science, well look no further, you will find a bunch in this company. Many thanks to the TDP program. Never before have I seen an IT department full of incompetent people. The CIOs relied heavily on what IBM tells them and use all their products so that IT doesn’t really need to know anything when crap hits the fan. They also hired a lot of contractors to get the real work done because all the full time employees know nothing and just sit around waiting for the contractor to tell them what they need to do.

    Pros

Pay is above average, 37.5 work week. (so they tell you)

    Cons

TOOOOOOOOOOOO many middle and upper managers. the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing. Work load is massive. unrealistic performance goals. When you leave Friday expect to have at least 10 claims waiting for you when you come back on Monday. We are encouraged to take liability offsets which is a performance measure and illegal.
