I worked at Life Time Fitness full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Free membership. Most of the people that work there are great and LTF has a fun environment.

    Cons

Horrible compensation, barely livable compared to other companies. No advancement opportunities. Some Sr Mgmt incompetent.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give some of the money from Sr management to the people that actually do the work, and make advancement opportunities available.

I worked at Life Time Fitness full-time

    Pros

Working just ten hours a week gets you a free membership (normally 100+ a month!), fun work environment with great benefits that come along with your membership such as gas discounts, movie discounts, etc. If you put in a hard work effort you will be rewarded quickly with promotions

    Cons

while working, especially near the end of summer when everyone goes back to school we were understaffed at times making it difficult to stay within regulations. Very strict corporate rules (I worked next to the corporate offices). If you didn't have the vision and mission statement memorized at all times, weren't within in strict accordance with dress code, etc you would be written up. People from Corporate like to come in and pretend to be members to see how you react. Many i dealt with however were unreasonable and expect high quotas when they haven't worked a day on the floor.

I worked at Life Time Fitness full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The philosophy and mission behind Life Time is inspiring. The benefit of a free membership is great if you can find the time to take advantage of it.

    Cons

Upper management tends to be fragmented in their direction. This has you chasing your tail a bit and trying to support the demands of too many "must have" priorities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to set goals and direction for the year (or even for the quarter would help). Then have everyone work toward those same goals. When a new request surfaces, you need to determine if this is more important than the others already agreed upon. If it is, then one of the old goals must be replaced with the new one - not added to the list.

I worked at Life Time Fitness full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Free membership. Very "healthy" environment to work in- culture that is encouraging of healthy eating, exercise, etc. Related to that though- You will be in the (silently judged) minority of your're out of shape, overweight, drink soda, etc.

    Mostly business casual dress code.

Certain positions also allotted cell phone and home internet connectivity allowance in addition to base salary, usually had access to great cutting edge technology, very satisfied with salary.

    Cons

Only 10 days of PTO a year (whether it's sick or vacation), that you must use by the end of the calendar year. This does not allow for much work/life balance.

Benefits were just OK, which is a little odd considering it's a "Healthy Way of Life Company"

CEO has a temper- which I witnessed firsthand, not just going off of rumors. He is very driven, and perhaps that is the type of personality needed to be "successful" but cursing and losing your temper with employees or situations usually doesn't go over well in the long run.

His team of upper management is comprised of guys that have been by his side nodding yes since the first club was opened. For the most part, it's not horrible, but you eventually get the feeling that you either 'drink the kool aid' or you don't, and if you don't you're out.

I have been working at Life Time Fitness full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Free membership, low formality culture at corporate office, fun people (most of the time). Great place to get a ton of experience because they run a LEAN team. Fast paced culture means you'll never get bored. Great place to learn as much as you want about your personal health and fitness with tons of great and knowledgeable people!

    Cons

No work/life balance or respect for employees. When you meet a goal, all they expect is more. It never seems to be good enough. Feels like a "boys club" a lot of the time with senior management... you really feel the glass ceiling here.

I feel like i'm always connected to work- at home I feel like i have to check my email at all hours in case a senior leader needs something. At times it feels like i'm working with jr-high age people. If you don't like profanity, you may get easily offended.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please value your employees. We know members are #1, but if employees aren't valued, we can't make it the best experience for our members. Employees are NOT just at your disposal. It does matter when we lose employees because of turnover costs.

I have been working at Life Time Fitness

    Pros

There are alot of growth opportunities in the growing company. The company is truely focused around it's mission and is driving towards that to change the lives of as many people as possible for the better.

    Cons

Benefits and compensation are subpar compared to similar positions. Most people start working for Life Time Fitness to move up quickly through the ranks while making less money for a few years and then leave and make alot more money with another company. The senior leadership is a visionary group who truely care about the company. However, they still have a very strong "good ole boys club" mentality about them. There are no females in senior leadership. Even at the club level, all of the area directors are men.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Work to put compensation and benefits at a comparable level to other companies with similar positions. You get what you pay for and if you compensate highly qualified people, you will retain them and the company will grow even faster. Lose the "good ole boys club" it's the 21st century.
