Professional mobility

Planning Manager (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Los Angeles as a contractor for more than a year

ProsPlanning staff has a wide array of projects, issues and disciplines in which to operate within. High degree of continuing professional education and gainful hands on experience from GIS, economic analysis, housing, transportation, code development, opportunity for professionalism

ConsProfessional testing leading to career advancement is competitive and standard by governmental requirements. However, the selection process with regards to appointment is obfuscated by subjective metrics inherent to an established 'old boy network'.

Advice to Senior Managementdepartment should be more reflective of the populace it serves

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company

A seasonal job with fluctuating workflow, with a lot of overtime required closer to Election Day.

Senior Election Clerk (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Los Angeles as a contractor for more than a year

ProsDepending on the team you work for, there is usually a sense of comradery. You can get pretty close with coworkers, since you work long hours with your team. This is a good first or second job to have if you are an as-needed employee.

ConsA division between teams can occur, slowing down productivity and/or the harmony in the office. Many as-needed staff don't feel fairly treated.

I was an I.T. intern there

I T Intern (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Los Angeles part-time for less than a year

ProsSome of your coworkers will be awesome and helpful. They give you more jobs than just data entry. They were very flexible on what days I came in.

ConsSome of the managers are incredibly distracted and do not like to work. One of them actually checked his stocks all day and chatted with his family from home.

Engineer

Environmental Engineering Associate (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Los Angeles full-time for more than 10 years

ProsDowntown LA. Decent pay and benefits, but each year entails more cutbacks.

ConsToo many outside consultants, a waste of money; work could be done in house. Waiting for an opening in the DWP. Furloughs and no pay raise in years with rising outside costs = pay cut. Riordan pension plan would be a disaster for the City and its workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementCultivate leaders early in their career. Cut out expensive consultants.

Friendly people, not much learning experience - intern

Intern (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Los Angeles as an intern for less than a year

ProsPeople are friendly at the face. Work load is light. Working environment is good. suppliers are generous.

ConsLittle learning experience - interns are the king of photocopier and scanner. Other than preparing handout for meeting, there is nothing much needed for an intern. Feels like a waste of time.

Advice to Senior ManagementHave better structured internship, or rather, there is no need to have graduate students to do copying work.

Job security... sort of...

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I worked at Los Angeles

ProsGreat pension, medical/dental benefits provided for part-time employees. Friendly and culturally diverse work environment. Networking and interaction with employees of many levels with in a company.

ConsSome times the only way to get promoted or to advance was solely based on who you knew. Too many lazy employees who would do just the minimum to keep their job. Some times there is an "every-man-for-himself" mentality.

Advice to Senior ManagementManagement needs to become more engaged with employees and actually get know who they are on a professional and personal level.

Well paid but depends on which council member you work for

Press Deputy for City Council Member (Current Employee)
Los Angeles, CA

I have been working at Los Angeles

ProsWorking for City Council can be exciting especially if you have a great boss. I loved my team and learned a lot.

ConsPeople take themselves really seriously and think they are running the world when in reality very little gets done. It requires a lot of initiative to move things forward.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe budget situation is a mess but I'm hardly the first to say this but it does make work in LA unstable.
