    Pros

Meet lots of different people, work in city hall, and hands on with many important projects transforming Los Angeles right now

    Cons

The office was rather dull, limited food options in City Hall and nearby, and the atmosphere was rather laid back and boring

I worked at Los Angeles full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

-You can gain exposure to many different disciplines and fields. You could be working at the Housing Department for a few years, then transfer to the Police Department, then get promoted to a position at the Zoo, then transfer to Rec and Parks, or one of 20+ other departments. -Generous compensation for most positions -Exceptionally generous benefits (see cons) -Prior to the recession, professional development opportunities were plentiful. I received advanced training in MS Access and Excel, HTML, Dreamweaver, and all sorts of soft skills. I attended regional and national conferences. All of that ended around 2009.

    Cons

-Employees did not pay a dime toward health benefits. That made me very uncomfortable because the taxpayer was footing that bill. And that is not a luxury that most workers enjoy. Any efforts to raise the issue with union representation were frowned upon. I appreciated being part of a union, but believed we should be footing at least 25-50% of the bill. -If you are a civil service exempt employee or you work for an elected official, there is no such thing as guaranteed employment. If your boss terms out or doesn't get re-elected, then you are on your own unless they 'protect' you. -Attitudes of employees who 'clockwatchers' or are 'phoning in their perfomance' can be disheartening. -Very hard to get a non entry-level job with the City without knowing anyone.

  10. Working for city

I have been working at Los Angeles as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Location, relaxed work environment (not a lot of evils of corporate America), can maintain work life balance better here.

    Cons

Some teams within the city are far behind in technology, too much hierarchy, typical "government attitude", red tape. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule, but this is typical.

    Advice to Management

It's got the best working environment more favorable to employees. Some may be pushing it. Several people who should have retired continue to work and that brings down (in my opinion) overall performance. At the time, I am sympathetic to the city employees that built their life there - some have been working there for over 40+ years. They cannot simply go out and survive. City should create some alternate programs/projects, so some of these employees can phase out slowly and lead way to more youngsters. Mere pension plan isn't enough. On the other hand, unions seem to be controlling a lot of those. While I am a proponent of unions in general (I believe this balances the evils of corporate America), some of the union decisions seem ludicrous. For e.g., at the city, a lot of IT works belong to the same union as the Janitors - no disrespect to them, but I feel the priorities and the work style of the 2 groups are totally different (opposite?) that for IT employees, the union feels like a misfit.

  11. Slow environment, good benefits, great location in DTLA, really depend on the job position, but as for me:

I have been working at Los Angeles full-time

    Pros

    - not so stressful - easy work - good benefits - ok pay - opportunities to move up, especially if you have a degree

    Cons

    - may be too slow if you can keep yourself productive - have to deal with a lot of inadequacy - pay can be better, but thats more of a personal problem
