    Pros

    Teh best reason to work here is the quality and extent of the benefits: full family coverage including vision care, etc and retirement contributions.

    Cons

    LAUSD is an employer that considers its front line employees (teaching staff) to be the lowest level organizationally. Virtually any out of classroom position is considered a "promotion" and the majority are paid more than teachers. LAUSD values external resources more highly than its internal resources paying consultants and service providers more than using or developing its internal resources. Finally, LAUSD does not support its teachers in the ongoing battle for societal development of a "culture of learning" demonstrated in its lack of support of teachers when faced with discipline challenges (threats or acts of violence against teachers) or parental challenges (threats, acts of violence against teachers, neglect of parent responsibility for student participation in school).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Neglecting and abusing staff is not the way to produce a quality product, be organizationally efficient or have a good reputation in the community. Learn to work with your teaching staff rather than against them. Listen to their expertise, consider and implement their solutions, use their skills, reward them financially and culturally, support them when they are challenged, develop them positively rather than punitively when correction is needed. Reorganize the organizational structure and language to reflect respect and support for the teaching tasks. Superintendent, board and exec management have the power to make the changes if only they would do so in earnest and with integrity.

    Pros

    It's better than nothing. Hourly rate of pay is good, but no benefits or job security.

    Cons

    Paid by the hour. Limited to working 12 hours a week. No benefits. No opportunity for tenure. Administrators don't support faculty. Teachers are verbally abused by students on a daily basis. Standards are extremely low. Teachers are pressured to give credit slips to high school students who read at fourth-grade level to make the school "look good."

    Pros

    Good health benefits and opportunities if you curry favor with the right people.

    Cons

    You can be sent to any school, to teach any subject, with little notice. There is a network of people protecting each other at he upper administrative level, making everyone nervous and vulnerable.

    Teachers are your best resource for improving education. If you don't include them in your decisions, mistakes will always be made.

    Pros

    The district used to offer lifetime health benefits -- but not any more. There are no positive reasons to work for LAUSD if you can find any other school district.

    Cons

    The Board is oblivious to anything but politics. The Board dismisses teachers without knowing all the facts, especially exculpatory evidence

    Pros

    Kids for the most part are great!

    Cons

    Top heavy with do nothing administrators. Money wasted on programs that do not get results, teaching to the test, i.e., "they knew everything, but understood nothing." Teach people how to think, not memorize facts. Old boy network that is schlerotic, slow movomg cumbersome... bright, innovative, creative, people are punished.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Establish oversight by qualified civilian personal with no financial, or business ties to Board Of Education. Establish trade school programs. Tailor education to kids's aptitudes and talents. Establish psychological, and business programs beginning with middle school.

    Benefits are good and you get paid.

    Cons

    Low pay, Very very bureaucratic and political. Children come last in their thinking. They are always into changing things without finishing what they start, never mind how it affects the kids.

    Pros

    You can make a difference in a child's life here, and good people are desperately needed. Think of it as the Peace Corps without leaving the country.

    Cons

    The upper management is corrupt and nobody who is honest is secure. They will work you as hard as you let them and they will get rid of you as soon as they can when you reach the top of the pay scale. You have to keep your head down and your mouth shut to survive. The union is completely useless.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Veteran educators have great value in the classroom and should be cherished. Also, if you want to make money without earning it honestly, go into another field and stop ruining children's lives.

    When you work for certain programs, the supervisors are all friends and will blackball you if you stand up for your students or parents.
