I have been working at Lowe's

    Pros

Many great employees, many wonderful staple customers. You develop a great sense of pride in your work and product knowledge. Going above and beyond to make a customer happy is what this job is all about. Taking initiative.

    Cons

Retail is stressful. You are often pulled in multiple directions at once. You are often instructed to do multiple things different ways by management. Your actions are constantly in question, ex: Why are you in the paint aisle? Because you were helping a customer etc.. If you are full time, you are on a rotating schedule. You have no say in the hours. This can cause problems with school, family etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If an employee has been with a company four over four years and has trained countless other successful employees, rather than harassing them about the same things every day, lets give them the benefit of the doubt that they are on top of their duties. Less criticism = Less anxiety = Happier, more productive workers. Also promotions: If an employee is extremely successful is their current post, it might seem easier to keep them there than fill that position, however it is important to allow that employee the opportunity for promotion or a change in job direction. Do not hold them back because they are just "that good".

I have been working at Lowe's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

The retail hourly pay seems reasonable compared to the State of New York minimum hourly income. Surprised that benefits are offered to part-time employees. Of course, you have to pay into the benefit system.

    Cons

Supervisors have been great. However, cashiers have to learn the job with real customers without any real formal training. The cashiers are on a learn as you go basis with minimum training.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

How about instructing new cashiers on the use of the cash register before throwing them out to learn as you go.
How about a learning manual that instructs new cashiers the different moves on the cash register to reinforce what they learn from the head cashier and fellow employees.

    Pros

You can make your opportunities at your store, or transfer to a better location, depending on your needs, preferences, or promotion/transfer opportunities.

    Cons

Poor communication exists, poorly trained ASM's (they're not given much in 'people skills' for training)

I have been working at Lowe's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Relationship building with contractors. Forming lasting trust - and friendships - with customers. Routine job, rarely any surprises. You can pretty much do this job with your eyes closed as long as you have good memory and work well with others in a team environment. You have to be friendly, smiling, personable, approachable and very outgoing at all times. When you fail to greet a customer, fail to smile at them or fail to engage a customer in any way, they notice and will call you out on it. Best thing about this position is the hours. I have a set schedule, 6am-3pm Mon-Fri only. Never work past 3pm, and never work any weekends is great and rare to find in any "retail" position these days. No other position

    Cons

Overcoming objections when trying to push add-on sales such as credit cards, extended warranty plans, Mylowes tracking loyalty cards, etc. Must meet weekly quotas for opening new Lowes business and consumer credit cards. Trying to stay on top of your credit goals and EPP goals can get challenging and stressful at slow times, that is why it's important to open all the new accounts you can during the busy months such as spring and summer. Getting new credit accounts is your number 1 priority at all times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More team-building exercises to dispel cliques that occur in the store. Make sure your management team knows they have to speak to/greet and smile at their fellow associates when they walk by them as well as customers. Most SMs and ASMs will just be nice to customers, but treat their fellow associates like strangers and totally ignore them in passing to the restroom or break room or whatever and they won't even acknowledge or speak to you. A focus on team-building will improve and strengthen morale in the store in my opinion.
