Lowe's has great people (in the stores), horrible schedules, and a Corporate Office that has no idea what is going on

I have been working at Lowe's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Good Benefits, Great People, decent pay, opportunity to advance (if you want an even worse schedule). Lowe's really does support great customer service.

    Cons

Terrible Schedules including constantly rotating days off and hours. Regardless of how hard you work you can expect about a 3% raise each year. Lowe's has a corporate office that wastes everyone's time with mindless tasks which don't actually add to the store, terrible merchandising. The whole idea of the Corp office being there to support the stores is simply missing at Lowe's.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You really need to look at what stores need rather than just pushing out your 1 way communications to them. You really need to set up a better scheduling system for everyone, so they aren't bouncing around all the time. And you really need people in the corporate office who have worked in stores. Too much of what you think is working isn't.

I have been working at Lowe's full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Lowe's is a solid company, and the risk of unemployment is low. The position prepares and challenges the mind to be customer-oriented, efficient with time, and highly thoughtful. The schedule is pretty much permanent, and after five years of service, employees are rewarded with 3 weeks of vacation.

    Cons

Managers are scheduled ten hour workdays, but eleven and twelve hour days are often required to keep up with the demand from customers, market, and regional direction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There is a lot of administration work to be done. I spend much of my time auditing the work of others for compliance and accuracy. Unfortunately the computers are not programmed in a way to prevent actions that are not compliant with policy. Many things could be improved, and the customer could receive more attention if only the IT infrastructure were improved to make management more nimble, efficient, and effective in the store.

    I worked at Lowe's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

Plenty of hours to be had, but mostly on weekends/ nights. Company values seem to be in order. I worked with some good people

    Cons

    I worked at Lowe's full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

In house education so to speak. Means lots of room to grow.. If you embrace the business and ask for help, you can succeed. Good benefits, good in house support.

    Cons

Pay rate adviser can be a plus or con depending on where you are in your career when you come to the company. Without a degree, no matter how well you perform you will never be compensated the same as someone with a degree. Same goes for past experience. If you don't have a retail background, no matter how well you perform you will not be compensated as much as you would if you did. Training system has gone away. At every level you will be thrown in to the water and if you don't swim, you better hope your superior can help. Your career will depend on the person in directly above you.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back some of your training for your Department Managers in store. You will see more production and better qualified candidates in house. If you want to grow from the outside, don't change a thing.
