I worked at M&T Bank as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

My manager was very easy to talk to and always willing to help. She provided excellent feedback and was ready to back you up when you were right. My teammates and other coworkers were friendly and always willing to answer questions. The atmosphere was very comfortable as my position did not require micromanaging.

    Cons

I was under a 12-month contract. When a position opened on my team for a permanent position, I was told I would not be granted an interview because I was not a "true" employee of M&T and only internal employees would be considered. Internal employees included term and temp employees who worked directly for the bank. It turns out that other internal employees were also excluded because they knew how to do their jobs extremely well and were more than competent. The hiring manager obviously wanted only mediocre employees who would not be considered a threat.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiding behind ridiculous ad hoc rules and hire people who are best for the bank and for the customers, not those who are yesmen.

    Pros

Benefits were good, including time off policies. Solid reputation in the market and discounts on products. Employee Stock ownership program is available

    Cons

Lower wage scale than that of competition. Very strict lending policies creating an inability to compete effectively.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Take more risks.

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The people (your colleagues) and vacation time.

    Cons

It is all about the shareholders (mostly upper management).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

If you don't focus on the next generation of leaders (v. the upper management that won't be around in 10 years), you will continue to lose these people to the competition. What are you doing to incentivize the people that have been with M&T for 5-10 years? They will be the ones that will be around 15 years from now.

    I worked at M&T Bank full-time

    Pros

Great Management, Flexible Time Off, Good Benefits and 401K match

    Cons

Little upward mobility, behind on technology

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get more advanced technology to be more competitive with other banks. Come on, no mobile deposits? Other banks have been doing this for years now. We are really lacking in the technology department.

    No Communication

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

    Company values helping the client.

    Cons

Was not warned that my salaried status was changing to hourly pay until a month after it happened. IT system is from the stone age and creates customer frustration when employees cannot access information in a timely manner. Consesus-based decision making creates for a long waiting period for anything to change.

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Fast paced growing position in commercial real estate loan administration. Good team to be apart of at the bank.

    Cons

Poor Management in place at the time. Needed supervisory training in order to effectively coach staff. More training would have been beneficial. Appreciation and Recognition would have been appreciated.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Communication is key with your employees. Positive feedback is better received then constant negative feedback.

I worked at M&T Bank full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Above average pay in the industry. Benefit are ok not the best. Paid holidays. Company discounts.

    Cons

No room to advance. Typically hire outside the company for promotions. Try to make you push products and not give customers the full details. Call nights calling on the same people over and over.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Their your ticket to hit goals. If someone comes to you with ethical issues do something don't bush it off.
