I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The experienced and knowledge that you acquire are top notch. Insurance is very good.

    Cons

Very low pay. Management makes you jump through hoops to give you pennies. They feel that you being employed by MD is good enough. In order to make more money you would have to leave then come back, which is ridiculous. The only reason most people stay is because they are up in age and are in their comfort zone and have been there over 15 yrs. Diagnostic Imaging has a huge turnover. The technologist are getting tired of all the BS.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The prestige of working at MD is not the only thing people need in life, they need good salaries.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

They put the salary on their website, which is rare. Most companies don't do that. Also, the health benefits are pretty good, and it's pretty good job security.

    Cons

Horrible work/life balance. Very hard to schedule off and LOTS of rules and red tape with employees. They treat you like a number and there's a lot of gossip, politics, and they will overwork you. All in all, there are a lot of other hospitals I would recommend to work for that treat their employees way better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually listen to your employees. If they're happy, they will work harder. If you ignore their concerns or don't give them promotions/raises after years of dedicated service, it will show in their work. Offer more work/life balance and scheduling off should be way easier. Do NOT LET EMPLOYEES COME TO WORK SICK!

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Love to help people; a lot of great people.
Im not in patient care but I love just to help them find an elevator if thats all I do.
    Tution assistance.
It would be the greatest place to work if the values of the founder were still echoing through the institution.

    Cons

Public image is only concern as is patient census with management.
Creates motion to have motion regardless of wastes of ineffciency. Then as a result uses this platform to cancel benefits and payouts.
Hr will not enforce anything, states "its managers discretion" regardless of the policy interpetation.
Upper mgt is a,lways looking to penalize low level workers and strip benefits from them all the while continuing to take exhorbent bonuses and building totems of worship for all to see thier greatness.
    Class warfare is constant
Wants to be the McDonalds of Cancer; have a treatment center on every corner.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I am sure Monroe Dunaway Anderson is rolling in his grave at what has become of his vision. This used to be place where employees were the "heart and soul of MDA" but now thanks to upper mgt over the last few years every employee is looked at as a burder or a unit of labor. The disconnect has happened, employees are no longer appreciated;some depts attemt to do good but HR usual steps in and frowns upon it... Poll your support personell; they see what is really going on, get their opinions, ask them if they feel welcome. The view is quite different once you are out of the ivory tower.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

The mission of eliminating cancer makes one feel special and the majority of the employees are committed and know the mission. Great retirement plan.

    Cons

Extremely political with doctors in charge with egos the size of Texas. The doctors are terrific physicians and scientists but that does not translate to knowing everything about everything. All the doctors have to do is whine to a higher up and they get there way. Bullying is rampant at the highest levels of the organization and no one does anything about it. Money is wasted through duplicate services and allowing the doctors to all have their own unique and customized way of working. The president and his wife plus the cohort of cronies they brought from Boston. The core values of caring, discovery, and integrity are just words and not practiced from the top down. The organization has degraded significantly over the last 10 years and has reached a crisis point.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a new president and vice presidents especially in patient care and administration.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

I had the chance to work with smart researchers. The offices are big and quite. There is a fitness center for free for the ones who works out regularly.

    Cons

Compensation is lower than the other places. Any paperwork takes long time inside the institution. The administrative personnel is not responsive to our concerns. Had to chance to see my advisor very rarely and briefly.
