    Pros

The benefits are excellent and good work is rewarded,

    Cons

It is a very stressful environment and some of the managers do not understand the jobs of the employees they manage and therefore have unrealistic expectations . The annual review system is used to pursue political agendas.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and do not punish them for telling the truth. There are big trust issues between management and employees.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The best benefits hands down. There are long term perks to working at the company that you'll benefit from even after you retire. Depending on the field of work you are in, this is a place for great networking opportunities. Due to MDACC being a research/teaching institution, there are many educational opportunities.

    Cons

Unless you are a nurse, PA, or upper level management, the pay is not where is should be. You will most likely find yourself doing more than your job requires with little to no compensation for it. It is extremely hard to move around. Department Managers have a strong influence in employees being able to leave their department. There is no work life balance.

    Advice to Management

Truly listen to your employees. Take the time to understand their job what it takes to get it done. Make sure that they have all the necessary training to do their job and follow up with you employees to make sure they have the tools they need to succeed. (I've been here a little over 5yrs and held 2 positions. I've faced the same issues with management in both positions).

    Pros

This hospital is number one in treating cancer and I am proud to be a part of it.

    Cons

Sadly, this hospital does have pediatric patients and it breaks my heart when I see them.

    Advice to Management

I feel like management should not be micro-managing and not having favoritism.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center (More than a year)

    Pros

-Great people to work with! -Getting to work with the community in our studies is very rewarding - Actually being interested in my work is something that is new and is a standard I will hold for all my future jobs

    Cons

    - Pay is low - practically no room for growth - Some people on my team could get catty/annoying, but hey that's something I'll face throughout life so not sure if that's a con

    Advice to Management

Allowing your employees to have room for growth could go a long way!

I worked at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Mission of "Making Cancer History" and the "Moon Shot" research projects are easy to get behind, but its the patients who are truly inspiring and who make it worth getting up and going to work every day.

    Cons

Ivory tower leadership can be elitist and there are a lot of political wars that do nothing but slow the already-slow process of getting things done through the UT System. Also, negotiate the salary you want going in, because raises are miniscule along the way, also thanks to UT.

    Advice to Management

Practice what you preach and focus on the mission, not politics.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

MD Anderson can be a great place to work. They do have one of the best benefit packages out of my entire work history compared to other healthcare institutions in the medical center, and in the long run those benefits can really be quite the advantage for their employees. They do have positions galore to TRY and move into or possibly be promoted to. Depending what department you work in; your work schedule can be flexible.

    Cons

Although MD Anderson has many positions to move into, well good luck trying to land one. The positions posted in their internal employee site are either already reserved for someone else in that current department or you have to know someone really well to get into that position. Other than that, you'll spend months applying to positions with no call of an interview. The pay for the positions can also be better. Some of the requirements are quite out of this world for the pay. You have people with BS, Masters, and MD degrees only making mid 50's a year, yet the work load and expectencies can be very much stressful. Directors also need to get a hold of their Managers. Some Managers really don't need to be in that management position but the directors of the department tend to play the blind eye, sort of a out of sight out of mind thing. Directors tend to promise and assure people that things are going to get better and what not, yet months down the line it's the same negative situation reappearing with managers.

    Advice to Management

Staff the building. You pay for what you get.

I have been working at MD Anderson Cancer Center full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Overall genuine concern and passion for patient care. Large population of patients is still cared for. State benefits, retirement plan and good healthcare benefits. Good for longevity.

    Cons

POLITICS, self serving motives, general sense of trust between employees is low. Highly bureaucratic environment. Top level leadership has a faded sense of reality and even lower understanding of the challenges facing IT employees in particular. Not sure there is a desire by leadership to understand real issues. Bonus driven leadership creates low morale in a highly stressful environment.

    Advice to Management

Come out of the clouds and listen to the "little" people. Stop being satisfied with ambiguous, high level overviews of issues.
