I have been working at MEMC Electronic Materials full-time

    Pros

Competitive base salaries and opportunities to work in Asia.

    Cons

Review the balance sheet over the past 5 years particularly at cash/equivalents and debt and decide for yourself if these are good trends and did they create acceptable value as a result. It's a very political environment so if you're not good at that sort of thing… This place has gone through waves of leaders since leaving Monsanto from a German utility company that knew nothing about the business and ran it into the ground to a VC that put a tyrant of a CEO in place who extracted every dollar of value for his own personal gain while destroying marketshare and the company's reputation to a rookie CEO with a money losing solar strategy.

I worked at MEMC Electronic Materials full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good and strong R&D. The pay was decent. Quarterly incentives used to be good. Most of the people are good to work with. Good work life balance.

    Cons

Management focus is only on short term goals. Need to improve on quality. Quality is not on par with the Japanese companies. Not much opportunities for career advancement. Most of the manufacturing has been shifted to Asia. No long term vision.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on long term vision. Improve quality.

Great Place If You Are An Executive

I have been working at MEMC Electronic Materials

    Pros

Growing company - if the stock analysts would wake up and realize that:
    1) We make wafers that "chip" companies buy -- we are not a "chip" company.
    2) We are not a semiconductor equipment company.
    3) We are the only completely vertically integrated solar company there is - from making poly to selling solar power.

    Cons

Executives are highly compensated, and get good contracts to pay them well if they get fired. Unfortunately, only Execs get the high salaries and perks, and the only way to become a VP or higher is to get hired in from current execs' companies, or to be lucky enough to be in the Execs' little circle of friends. For the rest of the Managers, Directors, and Senior Directors (new title made up to avoid letting you be a VP), you work tons of hours, have to fly coach all the time, and get small, shrinking bonuses based on impossible goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Recognize and reward the middle management. We do most of the work, and you get all of the benefits.

Find the real root causes of errors and fix or eliminate the problem. There are too many scapegoats used to protect certain execs.

Remember that Manufacturing makes the bad products. Blame them for once!

    Intense travel

I worked at MEMC Electronic Materials

    Pros

Salaries are at or above the industry average. Benefits are comparable or better as well. Salaried positions receive stock options as an added incentive. Many very talented people in the organization. A real opportunity to see the world.

    Cons

The travel requirements can be intense for many positions as there is not a lot of manufacturing done in the US.

    Pros

Exposure to senior management. A lot of responsibility and great industry to work in. Very high caliber of employees who can add significant value.

    Cons

Horrible communication, isolated, very top heavy with tons of VP'S and directors. The merge with the two business units reall

    Pros

Intelligent, motivated workforce. Global company, multiple learning opportunities, reasonable work-life balance.

    Cons

People work in Silos, inter-departmental incentives are not aligned. No proper people management systems. Company has been unable to truly integrate its divisions and realize synergies. There isn't a united culture across the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Repurchase shares and take the company private, put in place a long-range turnaround plan across 5-6 qtrs. Align incentives and set a unified culture of innovation, respect and performance across the company.

Pay and benefits comparable to peers in industry
Can learn about solar industry inside-out and on a global level
Good opportunity for MBAs to stay a few years and move on

    Cons

Poor communication overall and cowboy-style decision making by executives
    Poor employee morale
No effort on employee growth or leadership development
    Disorganized IT and HR

I have been working at MEMC Electronic Materials

    Pros

    very safe place to work
    It's not digging ditches

    Cons

Only fair pay and benefits as compared to the competition
This place is all about cost savings. Have had times when employees don't even have the supplies they need to perform their jobs
There is no advancement opportunity here

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Improve communication, 'm sure you are moving the company in the right directon, just be nice to know what that direction is.
