Current Employee - Senior Principal Staff in McLean, VA

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Opportunities to contribute to national security using decades of technical experience. If you can escape the inertia that your managers impose on you and focus on delivering what your sponsors need, you can thrive. The company IS trying to adapt to the ever-changing fractious government funding environment but much of this is beyond the corporation's control. The CEO, Al Grasso, is a technically-competent executive who is doing his best in a difficult environment.

    Cons

Clubby management that believes being selected for management automatically invests you with wisdom and technical genius beyond that of non-managers. Fairly poor follow-through on corporate promotion standards. Many managers hold staff to performance standards beyond what they themselves are incapable of meeting. The annual performance appraisal process is terribly flawed.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out of your offices and away from your endless management meetings, talk to your staff and learn what they are doing.

I worked at MITRE as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

    Brilliant engineers/scientists leading the groups.
    Standard day job schedule.
Nice gym + health stuff, including cafeteria.
    Good location.

    Cons

Relatively few benefits compared to hot shot tech companies.
    Just standard government contracting company.
    Has to deal with bureaucracy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Continue the student intern program!

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great work life balance, collegial environment, ability to pick own projects, 40 hr/wk expectation, great colleagues who are friendly and happy to help pass on their knowledge - the continuous learning opportunities are to notch, good pay.

    Cons

Advancement along the technical track is extremely difficult. It's a great place to get started in your career or for those who are established and want somewhere interesting and stable to work a reasonable amount of hours. Not a great place for a mid career person who is ambitious.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of this old fashioned "raise" mentality, if a relatively new employee is better than someone who has been at their "salary level" for years, they should be paid more and have more opportunities for advancement. Seniority seems to override merit.

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Generally flexible about working from home
    Casual, yet professional work environment
Good benefits: though the formula is complicated, capturing the full retirement match means that company contributes 10% of salary and it's with Fidelity so good inexpensive index funds are available.
Paid time off accrual rates have gone down recently, but still quite competitive. In general, the company's approach to sick and vacation time is very reasonable and fair.

    Cons

HR policies can be rather unimaginitive when it comes to recognizing and correcting internal and external pay equity issues.
Approach to budgeting is similar to government; there's always a mad rush at the end of each fiscal year to burn money. Effort is made to do so ethically, but the whole situation inevitably leads to some waste.
Very bureaucratic: forms must be filled out to get even simple tasks done.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We need to find a better way to track (and hopefully reduce) the cost of meetings. A lot of meetings are wasted time because people are invited "just in case" they're needed. Even meetings where I need to either get or share information end up being about 90% wasted time and could have been handled with an email or phone call instead.

I have been working at MITRE full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

The CEO is the best CEO of them all, period. Exposure to leading edge technologies. Educational opportunities.

    Cons

Internal job assignment determination is the worst I have ever seen. Employees are virtual in house contractors, searching for work, while HR continues to parade new employees through a revolving door. Internal resource managers are ill-informed, short-sighted and in many cases, downright lazy. Fix the issue of going from one assignment to another and this company will be elevated higher in the list of "Best Companies to Work". Leave it as is, and an evolving door may emerge. MITRE prides itself on being different from "Lockheed Martin, Northrup Grumman, etc." However, that's being just talk. With an influx of so many people from "for profit" companies, the internal atmosphere/values are changing for the worst. I only wish Mr. Grasso knew what is happening in the trenches/bowels of the company. I know he would fix it.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Considering the huge number of employees that have been hired over the last 5-10 years, there is a considerable risk that the culture that these employees bring with them will ultimately change the fabric of the company (which has been excellent) into something that is no longer worthy of emulation. Unfortunately, an environment of deceit, back stabbing and self-righteousness is emerging.

I have been working at MITRE as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

--The technologies that they're working on are really cool. Specific work depends on what department, but it seems like most of them are doing very interesting stuff.
--All of the interns that I've talked to are doing substantial work, definitely not coffee runners or staplers.
--Flexible hours. Official is 7:45am-4:30pm, but we mostly did 9:00am-5:30pm or so. You can be paid for up to 40 hours a week.
--Good compensation. Definitely not Wall St pay, or Silicon Valley either, but way better than most science internships.
--Lots of permanent employees have been there for 20 years+, so clearly they like something about it.
--Everyone was excited to have interns around, and very eager to help/mentor/chat.
    --There's a shuttle to/from the WFC metro.
--It's a lot of fun to be an intern in DC.

    Cons

--They're not used to out-of-town interns (most live in NoVa), so they're not helpful in getting housing.
--DC is expensive!! If you're in the suburbs, you need a car. If you're in the city, housing is probably $1000+/month and the commute is not convenient.
--The shuttle runs every 40 minutes, and the last run of the day is at 5:40pm. I often wanted to do longer days (or at least shifted later), and this prevented that.
--In general, the employees are pretty old. Probably an average in the 50s or 60s. Not necessarily bad, but interns definitely seem a bit out of place.
--The pace is kinda slow. I was very rarely given deadlines, just 'Oh, get it done when you have a chance, no rush.' At this point in life, I want to work under pressure and time crunches sometimes!
--They didn't always have enough work on particular projects. Some interns had plenty to do, and others were paid quite a bit to check their email and read the news for hours at a time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

--Offering subsidized housing would be HUGE.
--Make sure you have enough work for all of the interns you hire.
--In general: make suer you have young employees. Energy is good!
--But overall you're doing stuff right. Good job!
