    Pros

Challenging, interesting, employees seem to matter, great benefits

    Cons

Limited upward mobility on management track. Getting stuck in the wrong place can hold you back, but there are many opportunities to move around within the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bottom-up annual review. There is no way to let upper management know that lower management isn't very good. Fix this and it will be a great company to work for.

I have been working at MITRE full-time

    Pros

benefits are greater than the average benefits provided in the area. MITRE emphasises strongly personal development and provides all kind of support for employees to grow in areas of their interest.

    Cons

some may find the MITRE Way a bit overwhelming.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

promotions do not come very easy, yet it's not that difficult either. As long as an employee brings value to MITRE other than doing great work, they are easily noticed and rewarded. Training is on-going and a must by the management. They like to see everyone gets trained in some area of their interest.

I have been working at MITRE full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

MITRE is an employees company in that it allows employees the flexibility and freedom to manage themselves and really set their own hours, as long as its conducive to good business and you complete your assignments. A balance of work life is acheived through pushing employee well being programs and assistance. The pool of highly skilled techincal people is endless throughout the company and the reach back is pretty amazing. They offer to help pay for college, Undergrad and Graduate levels. They offer compensation benefits as far as matching contributions to reitrement plans and things of that nature.

    Cons

Salary is not in the upper most part of the paln here at MITRE. Promotions are slow unless you are a high level employee and them of course your bonus and pay get first dibs at the bigger pot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to push individual growth and foster a community of open door practices.

    Pros

Smart people who care about what they do for their govt sponsors and the American public.

    Cons

Can be bureaucratic, but it's a large organization. Needs to be more agile.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus more on delivering value/impact to govt customers and those they serve, and less on process and organizational structure, roles, etc.

I have been working at MITRE full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

MITRE works in the public interest; as a not-for-profit, its focus is on that mission, not on making money. Integrity is a core value and is demonstrated by "speaking truth to power" and walking away from jobs that aren't in the public interest. Focusing on the next innovation is encouraged; since you're surrounded by smart, well-educated, and dedicated professionals, you can continuously learn and grow. The retirement and PTOB are among the best in the industry and work/life balance is real.

    Cons

As an operator of FFRDCs, MITRE only works for the government - primarily the federal government. The inevitable bureaucracy, uneven and unsure funding, and political changes can be frustrating.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep talking and listening to the staff!

I have been working at MITRE full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of training opportunities, great work-life balance, flexible hours, good benefits. I actually look forward to going into work every day to work on the multiple projects I support.

    Cons

It feels like it is dominated by older management that doesn't always seem to quite understand the needs of the younger employees. Attrition lately seems to be a theme, but that also gives more opportunities for those of us who stick around to turn it around.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

We're a research and development company, right? I feel like if I want to research up and coming technologies I sometimes have to go out and buy some of them myself to get my hands on it in order to effectively evaluate it. Specifically mobile devices like iPads/iPhones/Android phones/tablets/the newest Windows Phone, etc. I don't always want to have the newest stuff, but it doesn't seem too expensive to have a lab somewhere buy this consumer grade equipment to research. Let's get the equipment so our researchers can research it!

    Summer intern experience

I have been working at MITRE as an intern

    Pros

Good work environment, everyone around me was helpful and contributed to my experience at the company. I learned a lot and am glad to have worked here.

    Cons

Described as a "retirement home", the population is older and work often moves quite slowly as a result. It is probably not the best place for someone just beginning their career.

I have been working at MITRE full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Great work in the public interest, generally good management and co-workers, flexible schedules, good benefits. With the Metro coming, the location is even better!

    Cons

I can't think of any that I wouldn't find everywhere else. It seems that promotions are not easy to come by, I believe they could have a better performance evaluation system in place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get out amongst the people more (pop your head in somebody's office and find out what they're working on).
