ConsLimited growth for internal employees due to aging work force

Poor Communication to lower level employees in regards to company vision and roadmap

OK place to work but secretive in some areas.

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
    Andover, MA

ProsOne of the better "high tech" companies in the area.

ConsThere seemed to be a "need to know" attitude about other product's design or manufacturing features. As an employee this seemed a bit strange, particularly when designing in a similar area.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to employees that have significant industry experience and act on it. The continued success of your business depends upon it. Although now gone, I'm still a stock holder.

MKSI is OK if you'd sacrifice compensation and advancement for good experience.

    "Engineer" (Current Employee)
    Boulder, CO

ProsOpportunities to learn all about the various facets of the business. MKS has a relatively flat organizational structure. This encourages interaction and communication between the various functional departments. It is a welcome alternative to mega companies and their job specializations.

Job security is very high with MKS. This is a good and bad thing for the company. However, it's good for employees because it is a partial result of a lack of expectations. MKS wants to keep employees in their niche within the company without moving them on. This means that once an employee gains mastery over their current responsibilities, they are secure until they want to move on.

A somewhat flexible office environment is also nice. Though to be honest, it's not much better than any typical engineering company.

ConsIt is no secret amongst employees that MKS pays on the low end of the scale. Employees typically begin their tenure in the ~25th percentile. This might seem fine except that MKS doesn't give raises based solely on performance. Therefore, if (and that's definitely a big "if") raises are available, everyone will likely get a nominal cost-of-living raise and that's about it. The employee then will never actually approach an average or above average base salary.

Low employee expectations is also a negative. Though it breeds job security, it doesn't help a person retain satisfaction with their job. MKS does not expect growth, but rather competence.

Advice to Senior ManagementFlexibility is no substitute for compensation and advancement opportunities to growth oriented individuals. I'm not saying every employee needs to move upward through management, but they can be given more opportunities for responsibility without threatening the management structure.

Good pay and benefits, but no growth opportunity

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsPay and benefits are nice, people are ok, the managers aren't too demanding, stable job that you can keep forever if you want it.

ConsNo opportunity for personal growth or advancement. People have been in their current jobs for many many years and expressed desire for movement within the company is frowned upon

Advice to Senior ManagementThe company is great. I enjoy the pay and benefits, but I would love more opportunity for growth and advancement within the company.
