Current Employee – been working at MPI Research

ProsThe company is in a growth phase and is offering jobs in Michigan (has highest unemployment rate in the nation). Newer departments, experiencing rapid growth, offer a wide variety of technical training and experience.

ConsThere are well defined career advance pathways on paper, but the implementation appears lacking. Employee morale is low, with few in low to mid level areas seeing MPI Research as a place for advancement and a longterm career. Upward advancement that does happen is firmly rooted in the Peter Principle. Upper management's opinion of entry level positions seems to be that everyone is expendable regardless of experience. Inter-departmental communication is generally inefficient. Knowing the select few who can provide you with the needed information is essential. Identifying the "select few" is done by trial and error and occasionally word of mouth. There is very little incentive to pursue higher education once employed even though more scientific education would most likely benefit work quality.

Advice to Senior ManagementA company wide picnic twice a year should not be the entire plan for improving employee morale. Find ways to reward good employees besides promoting them to positions they are unqualified for. Establish a feedback system within MPI Research to identify incompetent (and competent) employees at all levels and improve inter-department relations, accountability, and communication.
