The way they present the culture is great but they don't follow it

    OUTSIDE SALES (Current Employee)

    ProsThe benefits are good,

Consthe middle management only care about growth of your accounts and use micromanagement to try and keep you extra busy. Dont expect to make much of your commissions since the goals are so hard to reach.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the employees. They spend so much time talking that they don't understand the struggles of the feet on the street.

The only way to get things done right is to do it yourself

Account Representative (Former Employee) Manchester, NH

ProsStrong company with a good reputation, fairly good benefits, excellent distribution system that allows for the offering of a great variety of quality products

ConsSome coworkers are unmotivated and poorly trained, some with 20+ years with the company still do not know how to do the essential functions of the job, especially in inside sales

Advice to Senior ManagementPlease defer more to outside sales reps and accounting executives, especially in their assessments of inside sales

Too many hands trying to stir the pot.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsNice office, free coffee, nice cafeteria, good co-workers.

ConsToo many managers in other areas trying to manage the managers in our location by phone.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet the Managers manage their own employees in their own state. Seems like a power grab of what Manager can control the other. Divide the duties and let them work independently.

    Company ok for Jonestown PA

Customer Service Representative (Former Employee) Jonestown, PA

ProsGrowing national company with ok values. Above minimum wage. Benefits and vacation offered.

ConsVery rigid attendance policy. Goals and performance requirements in many departments very difficult to obtain. Long term associates are not valued. Unable to be flexible with associate issues.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate flexible programs to meet associate needs as well as meeting business needs. Associates will be more flexible and willing to meet the business needs when they feel the company is concerned about their needs and feel they are a value to the company.

"A great company that has taken the wrong turn"

    Sales (Current Employee) Atlanta, GA

ProsThe company has strong focus on the "Boss" our customer.

ConsLimited opportunity, many lost national accounts which penalizes the account executives. Becoming perscriptive in management style, and taking away from time in the field to sell.

    Old Barnes Distribution Rep

    OUTSIDE SALES (Current Employee)

ProsUsed to be many as a Barnes rep, finding it harder and harder to see any pros in the MSC world. I've always done very well in new business sales but finding it harder and harder to believe in company anymore with the lack of information, low pay and terrible fill rate. Sometimes I feel customer service people are my closest allies in the company.

ConsThis used to be a great company to work for before MSC bought us out. We used to have flexible schedules, make your own route and schedule. See customers as you see fit. Now management decides how often you see your customers and on which days (at least in my market).
Huge quota increases, unrealistic for smaller territory reps.
Highly micro-managed now that we are a part of MSC.
Have no idea where us Barnes reps stand or what we are going to be called or what will change tomorrow, if anything at all.
They claim we are to be selling reps now vs the old way which was service reps but this is probably one of the lowest paying outside sales jobs in my experience. And we've always had to sell new accounts. The activity they are asking us to deliver requires higher base pays as the commission levels are pathetic.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize good SALES reps wont stick around long with the low base salaries, low commission rates and high micro-management.
