Good place to work- Could be better

    Account Executive (Current Employee)

ProsProduct offerings and the ability to deliver on time to customer.

ConsTo much mid-management, compensation plan is very hard to understand, Micro management becoming a problem.

Advice to Senior ManagementCut management team in half so that the sales team doesn't have to carry all the weight of the company. Develop pay plan for all sales to understand. Stop with all the micro management.

Good Morals and ethics at MSC.

    OSA (Current Employee)

ProsGood place to work! The company values are true to what they tell you in training. You get 6 months to build your knowledge and resources.

ConsThe biggest challenge is learning the products, however if you just learn to tell your customer you'll look into whether or not you carry something, not just a flat out "no", MSC probably sells it or can source it.

Advice to Senior ManagementContinue to grow aggressive strategy to crush the competition

Great Company - needs to update technology

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsMany great people work here and training is excellent. I've worked here for nearly 10 years and have never been micromanaged. MSC does a lot of good things in the communities it's in, especially in the two headquarters locations. A lot of change is happening now, which can be uncomfortable, but in a big-picture view, the changes being made are needed for the future. We can't grow the way we want to without making changes to our infrastructure.

ConsTechnology is not cutting edge, or even close. Technology that we have, we don't use to its full potential. Hopefully this will change.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe competitive with compensation - not just when hiring, but when promoting and retaining. We are losing people after a long stretch of low merit budgets.

Overall great company but have pockets of hostile management. Seems to be no accountability for some management

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsGreat co-workers; good benefits; gives back to the communites they are in. In the past had a strong corporate culture, has since been slowly eroded over time.

ConsHostile work environment from one division's senior management, no understanding of the work being performed by senior management, and will retaliate against anyone who speaks up.

Advice to Senior ManagementStart respecting your employees, show true leadership, and ensure toxic management is either reined in or removed from management positions.

    Baptism by Fire

TeleSales Account Representative (Current Employee) Southfield, MI

Pros-lots of overloading training in your first years
    -generous insurance plan
-technical support team to back you up
-commission is great...if you can actually make it.

Cons-just about everyone in the office is written up due to unrealistic metrics
-managers all have different levels of knowledge/style/rules followed
    -micromanagement at it's "finest"
-living on welfare 80% of the time.

Advice to Senior ManagementLet us swap vacation time. It says you can in your handbook, but each location chooses or doesn't choose to follow it!!!

    Strong culture, great distributor.

    OSA (Current Employee)

ProsStrong support, training, and product offering. A lot of great ideas in the works to really kick the sales group into high gear.

ConsWeak on tools for selling. Lots of promises delivered way too late. What tools there are are locked down with security and lack of remote access. No company laptops. Heavy metalworking focus is tough to beat in the market but can leave MRO based sales folks out in the cold or needing to adapt metalworking sales tools to MRO uses.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep up the good work. Ease up the reigns on OSA data security for remote access or issue company laptops or tablets. See you at $10B!

Great Company, dysfunctional Human Resource Department

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsSome of the best and brightest people in the Distribution field.

ConsHuman Resources is supposed to be the keeper of the "culture" yet, at the highest levels, are the biggest violators of the "culture".
