'PERMALANCE' - hello IRS are you hearing us?

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at MTV Networks

ProsYou can disappear in a network of offices, work lazy hours and have little responsibility.

ConsFake benefits, no job security, salaries that are FAR BELOW industry standards, Times Square foot traffic, little vertical career movement.

Advice to Senior ManagementInvest in your employees and we'll invest in you. Hey Philippe - take 10mill off your 90mill annual salary and treat your employees like human beings. Benefits are not a state of mind.

A Fun Place To Work If You're On The Right Project

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at MTV Networks full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGreat benefits, some great projects, lots of flexitime and cool events and some great experiences, pro-social initiatives. If you're starting out this is a great place to start your career. Having MTV on your resume does still open doors.

ConsBudgets are tight but this does not apply to some Execs spending - who seem to spend their budgets like personal cash, whilst others are fighting for a few dollars. People in positions of seniority with a lack of management ability. A lack of visibility.

Advice to Senior ManagementNeed to identify the real talent, as opposed to listening to those who take credit for other people's work and blow a lot of hot air. The company does not have the cache it once had, and this needs to be addressed before the market diminished further.

I love and enjoy working for MTV but I just wish there was more room for mobility within the company.

ProsIt is a great place for people to work if they are young and interested in the entertainment industry.

ConsThe company lacks mobility within the company.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think most of the leadership at MTV is great and you guys should try to work harder to promote within.

I have learned alot during my time with the company and feel that it does a great job in balancing work/life.

Executive Assistant (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at MTV Networks

ProsWork/Life balance - They are very proactive with spending time outside of the office. During the summer season we get every other Friday off and there is always an event where you can bring children.

Benefit - The benefits are pretty good and rarely do you hear about premiums increasing or getting less than prior years.

Dress code - Unless you're in finance or sales, you can wear jeans and dress down most of the time.

ConsThere are opportunities, but unfortunately most of them go to friends of friends or relatives. The company should support more of its own employees.

ProsThe people. I've met some of the most interesting, dynamic, hard-working, and creative people here. Everyone has the desire to create good work, and for the most part it's a pretty inclusive and fun environment.

ConsWorking in Times Square every single day might destroy your soul.

A good learning experience for low pay

Freelance Copywriter (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at MTV Networks

ProsLoved my co-workers, had supportive boss, learned a lot in a growing field

ConsDisorganization, low morale, poor management decisions, narrow mindedness about investment in departments that are growing (there's a constant drumbeat of meeting financial goals -- even when the company is in the black and doing well. This leads to hiring freezes and even layoffs in 2011, on the heels of one of the company's best years on record.)

Advice to Senior ManagementSurvey employees. What do they like about working at MTVN? What are problems specific to their group/division? What would make them feel more motivated to work hard for the company and feel apart of something bigger than their individual responsibilities and duties? One common thread I heard from middle managers was a lack of constructive feedback from their superiors, in addition to conflicting and often vague directives. I heard from a number of managers a feeling of insecurity about what exactly it was their managers wanted from them, which made them feel helpless and unmotivated. It also affected the direction they gave to their subordinates. There's a culture of clock-watching and a sense of powerlessness as a cog in the huge Viacom machine. Employees face layoffs and managers can't hire, with the exception of freelancers, which contributes to a lack of continuity, loyalty and long-term thinking. It's too bad b/c employees are passionate about their subject areas (of expertise and entertainment area) and very creative. Smart people work here, which is one aspect of the company I really appreciate.

ProsLax work environment. Great hours. Top 40 Talent. Constant change and life. Competitiveness. Subsidized lunch.

ConsBureaucracy. Lack of structure can be frustrating. Times square location annoying.
