Horrible

Accounting Associate (Former Employee)
Sydney, FL

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for less than a year

ProsApparently high pay if you're in certain positions.
Good reputation - so good place to 'come from'.

ConsLarge bureaucracy.
People live the job and have no life outside.
Only see $$ signs.

Advice to Senior ManagementI think the bank needs to stop thinking of itself as an audit firm that can take in young talent and grind them to the bone, and expect them to be thankful for the privilege of working there.

Not a great place to work if you are not Australian

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsMet some smart, motivated individuals

ConsGlass ceiling if one is not Australian. The firm likes to hire young, inexperienced individuals and push out older experienced individuals. Not many women in leadership roles.

Advice to Senior ManagementFoster employees who have experience

Club for expat aussies

Managing Director (Current Employee)
Houston, TX

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 3 years

ProsGood pantry. Free granola bars and cereal for breakfast. If you are not ambitious or like the environment of a government type job, then this is an ok place to stay until retirement.

ConsAll key roles are held by expat australians. Americans are treated with suspicion and generally relegated to second tier roles. Company is very bureaucratic and it is impossible to get any major deals done. We are not respected in the marketplace, and potential customers generally snicker when we mention macquarie.
The management and its PR machine makes it worse by constantly repeating the statement "we are the goldman sachs of australia".
Management is petty and very stingy watching nickels and dimes more closely than any other place I've been at. Moreover, very unethical management (by American standards). Top management routinely has open affairs with female subordinates, and is condoned - maybe even encouraged amongst the expat crowd.

Advice to Senior ManagementCreate uniform HR policies. Treat people with respect, have the same standards for ALL employees.

Spent 8 years in Infrastructure Operations - Wasted my time and talents

IT Senior Manager (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 8 years

ProsMacquarie was once a wonderful place to work. Innovative, smart people, good energy. I think what happened was they took on more they could chew.... The company was huge on training making sure their IT employees stayed ahead of the technology game. As the company begun to lose money, so did their ability to invest in technology and tools. We were constantly losing business because clients found us unreliable with all the email and network outages. I worked there from 2005 to 20012, I met some great people, but most of them were all laid-off. The talent is really no longer there.

ConsThere are many cliques formed at Macquarie. There is an us (Australians) and them (Americans) mentality which has gotten worst through years. Posturing is a way of life there and if done correctly you can move up the corporate chain.

Advice to Senior ManagementListen to the people and respect those doing the work. Also, Australians need to stop feeling they are superior to the locals, it's tiredsom and degrading.

The Absolute Worst

Managing Director (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than a year

ProsSometimes they pay you on time.

ConsLiterally everything you can think of. I'm here to warn you - do not work for this company. They'll either fire you due to politics or you'll figure out that you're much more valuable than they give you credit for.

Advice to Senior ManagementGet your act together; research how businesses grow and succeed, figure out how to keep morale up, stop sucking.

Horrible

Senior Manager (Current Employee)
Philadelphia, PA

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 10 years

ProsGreat place for incompetent employees to hide in the machinery. Professional slugs can disappear into a vacuum, where management tries to measure performance by TPS reports, rather than actually knowing the capabilities of their employees.
Good place to start, if you can get by the suspicious HR/testing process for interviewing. Good candidates are often sent away.

ConsManagement consists of cut-throat Australian employees looking to make a name for themselves. U.S. employees are considered second-rate. Management fads are ten years behind the times. Use of technology is ten years behind the times. Employees are distrusted and replaceable. Processes matter, people do not.
Would not recommend to my worst enemy.
Politics are very thick, but mostly behind the scenes.
Management not able to distinguish advanced accomplishment from bench-warming.
Very frustrating environment. Employee opinions not valued.
Looking for new employment...

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize than individual contributions DO matter. Find a way to see the individual. Hint: it's not from fifty thousand feet up through time sheet reports.

Poorly run investment bank-wannabe

Managing Director (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Macquarie Group full-time

ProsWell stocked kitchen and pantry. Free breakfast cereals/milk.

ConsVery Australian centric business. Expat Aussies make all important decisions, and Americans are thoroughly distrusted. Management tries to cut costs constantly, nickel and diming at every opportunity. Bonuses have been cut drastically, and morale is terrible. The company is pretty ruthless in how it treats its employees, and managers have the ability to fire people at will for no cause.

Advice to Senior ManagementClean out expat Aussie management, and hire locals - they understand American work culture a lot better.

If you're smart, you won't stay long

Analyst (Former Employee)
New York, NY

I worked at Macquarie Group full-time for more than 5 years

Pros- high turnover and thin staffing means many opportunities for advancement, taking on additional responsibilities
- smart, hard-working colleagues
- open-door policy (for some management)
- regular communication from upper-level management

Cons- extensive interview process (and disorganised HR), tends to alienate potentially strong candidates
- compensation/bonuses don't reflect the long hours, dedication and hard work that's expected
- outdated technology/systems, and little (if any) investment planned in this area
- too much politics and bureaucracy (more than most comparable firms on the Street)
- no loyalty or appreciation...yesterday doesn't matter, it's always "what have you done for me today?"
- stress, stress, and more stress (did I mention stress?) - zero work/life balance
- extremely low team morale
- ineffective management (they tend to promote strong team players, rather than those with the actual skillset to be successful managers)
- Sydney management doesn't get the US business model, or how to succeed in the US market, which makes for a very confused, disorganised corporate culture in NY (torn between Aussie and US standards)

Advice to Senior ManagementAdapt from the Aussie business model if you want the US business to succeed. Hire locals who know how to get things done, rather than bringing in staff from Sydney. Give local management more authority/autonomy and trust the local staff you hire. Streamline the interview process and pay in line with the rest of the Street.

- lots of changes
- vibrant

Cons- unfair treatment of people
- personal relationships valued more than competence
- a very confused corporate culture

Avoid the place if you can

Vice President (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Macquarie Group

ProsLots of opportunity for junior level employees to advance

ConsCompensation is well below average resulting in high staff turnover and poor morale. Very bad management that either 't understand the US market or plain incompetent. Lousy work environment with a lot of office politics.

In short, Macquarie is the worst managed company I have ever worked for.

Advice to Senior ManagementIncrease pay to become more competitive versus peers and bring in new management that understands the US market.
