Former Employee - Replenishment in Milwaukee, WI

I worked at Macy's as a contractor (less than an year)

    Pros

    Discounts
Casual dress code/wear black or red
Get to talk to people at times

    Cons

    Terrible scheduling system
    Not flexible
Not the best experience dealing with retail
    Lack of communication w/supervisors, etc

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Fix your online scheduling. I was a college student at the time, and it was just completely unrealistic. I worked literally 1 time during the entire holiday/seasonal time! Unacceptable and a joke. And also specify exactly what Replenishment is supposed to do.

    One word, "Sucks"

    Former Employee - Sales Associate
    Former Employee - Sales Associate

    I worked at Macy's part-time

    Pros

The cons out weighs the pro's but for the sake of leaving a positive review on this site, I will say that the only "pro" is that you get to speak to different people from various works of life (customers) on a daily basis which will give you a good customer service and sales experience.

    Cons

Being constantly pressured by your supervisor about reaching your sales goal can be very annoying even having met and exceeded the goals numerous times. Yes I understand that a sales goal should be achieved but sometimes customers aren't flooding into the store on a typical day which limits the number of sales that will be made for that day. When one is given a huge sales goal on a slow day, with not so many customers parading the store, it makes the sales goal impossible to reach. The pay is below average. Clearing out messy fitting rooms filled with clothes and hangers all over the floor and having to put them back is another long story of its own... I mean I could go on and on but I will save my energy for a positive review .

    I worked at Macy's full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The company allowed me to implement new strategies that made our team more efficient

    Cons

The area of the company I was a part of had too many meetings with pointless topics.
When we did have a meeting about a subject that directly affected my team the meeting usually just lead to another meeting, so in the end it took a long time to resolve issues

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please focus on the topics at hand. The lower management and teams underneath are doing the
majority of the work. Help us resolve issues and implement them

    Pros

Love customers and most of fellow employees.

    Cons

Management is too worried about keeping their job. Constantly asking you to sell for credit cards. Management is not honest with employees. Internal management won't let current employees be promoted.
    Can be very competitive environment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually listen to feedback. Raise pay to keep good employees. Help current employees advance.

Current Employee - Retail Sales Associate in Tyson's Corner, Fairfax, VA
Current Employee - Retail Sales Associate in Tyson's Corner, Fairfax, VA

I have been working at Macy's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

There are very pros to working at Macy's: 1. Employee discount, but it's not as much as people may think. 2. A job is easy to get. They hire almost anyone who applies regardless of skill level, especially during the Christmas season, and to keep up with the constant turnover.

    Cons

Let's admit it. The main reason people shop at Macy's is for their cheap prices, coupons and almost continual sales. The Macy's corporation does not seem to care about their employees or their customers.
     1) Employees are given unrealistic sales goals, and even more unrealistic quotas for opening new credit cards. The management's policy is to keep pressuring the customers to open an account until they tell you "No" three times. Ridiculous!
    2) Majority of the associates who have worked at Macy's for a long time are very territorial and very resentful of those newly hired. They do not want to help and some will not even speak to you or acknowledge your presence.
    3) The training is so inadequate that some associates are put on the floor without even knowing how to work the register. 4) Some associates have such great language difficulties that neither they nor the customers can understand one another. 5) The management's idea of customer service is to have you stand at the register and ring up sales continually.
    6) You must also clean out the dressing rooms after customers who have never learned how to use a hanger. 7) Then you must also hang up these clothes, and most sales associates do not care where they hang them. 8) You are to keep the floor clean, but customers throw the clothes on the floor faster than you can hang them up. 9) Employees, even full time, are not given 40 hrs. a week. You are expected to hunt for available shifts to pick up.
    10) You will make a little over minimum wage. This does help with the bills, but hardly compensates you for all the work and abuse from both management and the customers that you must endure.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Require all managers to take some management training!! Learn that management is not simply trying to find something -anything- that is not done and scold the employee for not doing it. Revamp your "training" program to adequately teach employees how to handle the tough situations that occur.
Stop telling employees to call a manager when there is a problem because they refuse to come. Update your equipment! Replace the many registers, scanners, telephones, and sensor tag removers that do not work. Walk around the store and talk to both employees and customers to find out what is really going on.
And above all, stop printing mis-leading coupons and sale signs. Customers don't read the fine print and the employees take the heat when customers find out that the coupons are totally useless for what they want to buy.

Former Employee - Bilingual Customer Service Representative in Clearwater, FL

I worked at Macy's full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Good support for new employees. Job not as stressful as other call center jobs and a fun atmosphere is pushed by the managers. Employee discount.

    Cons

No differential provided to bilingual or weekend workers. Health benefits are mediocre and tuition reimbursement only made available for managers. Beginning schedules are for the most part in the evening. Managers talk to you while you are on a call. Call center is a huge room where it can get very noisy.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to push fun atmosphere. Provide differential pay for weekend and bilingual workers to be in line and in competition with other employers.
