    I worked at Macy's

    Pros

Flexible schedule, you get to choose what days and hours you would like to work. They really work with you if you go to school

    Cons

All they care about is numbers, you're just another person that works there even if you've worked for the company for years you're not really treated like an individual.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value more of your good workers, show some appreciation.

    Pros

The best reason to work for Macy's is the employee discount and the ability to make your own schedule

    Cons

Workers are overworked ,overlooked, unappreciated and asked to make a lot of sacrifices that are not worth the pay or incentives.

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

Discounts, discounts, discounts! Great hours during holidays if you need 30+.

    Cons

School schedule if you are in the support world. Sales associates have the best availability to schedules because they can give up or pick up shifts. Support associates cannot.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Better schedule options for support team

I have been working at Macy's part-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The Employee Discount is about the ONLY good thing to come from working as a Sales Associate at Macy's. It's, from what I can remember, only 20%, but you can add that on top of any sales. Also, Schedule Changes were allowed, as long as you found another employee to swap with.

    Cons

Macy's does not pay their Sales Associates well. It's terrible considering that trying to rack up sales is part of the job description. And trying to reach management is nearly impossible - you must call the main line and be transferred too many times before you can get someone to speak to, making it damn near impossible to call out sick.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Be more encouraging to Sales Associates. Continue rewarding good behavior. But don't force employees to set up Macy's account - that's just too much to unload on a customer.

    I worked at Macy's part-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

The people I worked I with were the best. The core group were always willing to help out where ever needed. They functioned as a team and are very supportive of each other.

    Cons

The management at my particular location were never shy about the fact that you were replaceable. There is a lack of communication when it comes to training. Several of the managers lack experience in there positions making it difficult to find answers to questions. Several employees would complain about not understanding what they were doing and why they were there. Most employees end up learning the minimum about doing several different jobs which leads to working an inconsistent schedule.
Promotions are far and few between, your best bet is to transfer to another store, even then they struggle with communicating available positions, and results of interviews.
Most of the time the main news from management is about what you did wrong the previous day, and nothing about what you did right, or offering encouragement to do better.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Openly communicating with employees about what they are there for, what the job entails, and what is expected of them. Letting employees know that you appreciate them showing up everyday or just treating them like they matter to you. A little goes a long way.
Being honest. Don't offer something to someone and then pretend like it never happened. We are hourly associates, we aren't corporate, there is little to no need to political game playing at this level. You just end up losing the really good associates.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Associate discount is ok. I started as a sales associate and within 5 years I was promoted 4 times by being very assertive.

    Cons

Long hours, rude customers, too many sales and coupons. Hard to keep up with current promos. Sales associate staffing is space making it difficult to keep up with customers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Macy'a needs to step up the level of customer service and sales experience. Increase staffing to elevate department store shopping experience.

    I worked at Macy's

    Pros

Macy's provides you with the skills and training basics in order to do your job. One of the training programs is MAGIC training it may not seem like much when your learning it but honestly, Macy's is a huge well known company. There is a reason why they would spend that much money to get the program out and have every single employee go though these trainings/class continuously. Learn the skills because if you use that there at Macys you can also bring it with you wherever else you decide to work after.

    Cons

Promotions are very limited, most of the employees I worked with have been there for years and hold a position as a specialist. Management is always changing most transfer from store to store. Not much room for advancement if you plan to stay at the same location.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

To remain professional at all times. Giving more recognition to employees not just for making sales or opening up the most credit accounts. Also, build employees and give them skills in order to move up and advance there career.

    I worked at Macy's full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The discount is pretty good. On top of the discount you can also use coupons and Macy's money. That is store 'money' that you receive when opening up accounts.

    Cons

The scheduling, pay, and stress are the worst. Retail is not easy but the amount of work put in for minimum wage is stressful. Lack of career opportunities as well.

    I worked at Macy's

    Pros

the people i worked with were cool. learned about how to deal with the general public; had lots of return customers; got a pretty good employee discount

    Cons

working with rude customers; people would leave piles of clothes in the fitting room and urinate on them; hard to get raises; management was not engaging; too many other things to name; based workers quota on how many credit accounts opened.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

personal growth; do more reviews; longer breaks for workers; instead of critiquing about everything did wrong during a transaction and having us sign a paper acknowledging what we did wrong, advise how to do better next time.
