    Okay Job With Okay Pay

    Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)

ProsVery flexible. As a part time associate the hours are great. Don't have to stay after store hours like other retail stores

ConsMinimum wage. Management was horrible. They showed favoritism to older employees didn't pay attention to newer employees. Expected you to know everything about the store with very little training.

    Retail sucks

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Downey, CA

Prosemployee discount, flexible schedule, okay starting pay and increase on a regular basis, opportunities to advance.

Consclothes everywhere, little recognitions, employees can be annoying depending the department you're in. For example, I was in the juniors department, one of the busiest in store due to everyone trying to dress young and trendy. Well since it's the most busy, you work with more employees and if they are young adults, it can be a lot of dram and hassle.

Advice to Senior ManagementMore recognition, and stop having playing favorites. super annoying when some girls dont do nothing and just stand there trying to be cute.

No consistency, but not a terrible place to work.

    Sales Associate/Specialist (Current Employee)
    Kennesaw, GA

ProsMy Schedule Plus is a great tool to help you get your schedule to fit your life. The associates are mostly nice, a few obnoxious apples, but they don't spoil the whole bunch. It's a good place to learn about how retail works. They're pretty transparent about their goals and what they expect of people, so that makes it decently laid back. If you do your job and you want to move up, you will. They also give you a lot of power to do what you need to do to keep the customer happy, so that's nice.

ConsThe work environment with it's sales goals and credit goals tend to keep people on task, but sometimes it makes them mean. The management is not consistent, at least not in my store. They are alway switching up people and any connections you make seem to feel hollow and useless because they aren't going to get you anywhere, really. I just recently moved up in the department and now I'm going to have to start with a new manager that I don't even know. They are really credit hungry in this place, even on days when they know it's gonna be rough to get them.

Advice to Senior ManagementKeep the credit incentives the same, it's hard to sell when you keep changing it from 20% to 15% savings on their bill when they open an account.

ProsThis is a great company to work for when you are a recent high school or college graduate. The hours are flexible and wages are decent.

ConsThere is no way to move up in the company from within. If you want a promotion you have to reapply outside and be re-interviewed. I would not suggest working here as a career job.

    Unimpressive

    Sales Associate (Former Employee)
    Newington, NH

ProsI can pick my own hours with flex scheduling, and usually there's 20-30 to pick from each week. Work is fairly easy. You can try on cosmetics and it's really fun to learn all about the makeup.

ConsAt just above minimum wage, the pay is unimpressive. They don't train you. You watch 8 hours of videos in the HR office, but then when you're on the floor, you're pretty much thrown to the wolves, which results in both awkward and embarrassing situations. I had to close my section of the store ALONE the first night I worked, not knowing how to close the register or when or how I could leave the store. Some of the associates were great, while others were rude and standoffish - acting as if being an employee of Macy's for 5+ years is an accomplishment, and as such, they don't need to associate with new workers.

Advice to Senior ManagementTrain people on the floor, especially for their first week or two. Give them a seasoned and understanding associate rather than hanging them out to dry on their own. More emphasis on product knowledge would also be appreciated.

There more good days than not so good

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsI have promoted twice in 5 years. If you are willing to put in the work MOST of your efforts are noticed. I enjoy working with my team of associates.

ConsSalaried managers can quickly whittle their pay down to minimum wage based on the number of hours worked each week. They promise a work/life balance but I have not figured that part out yet

Advice to Senior ManagementStaff appropriately for the results that you want. I can not have 1 person covering a large and expect to have a neat, clean and friendly environment.

    – I'm optimistic about the outlook for this company
