I worked at Macy's part-time for more than a year

    Pros

I really enjoyed working at my store. Your experience will greatly depends on the store, management and other employees. There are several different opportunities for you to earn some extra store credit and personally I found the competition a bit fun. The job is pretty easy and lenient and most customers are great to work with.

    Cons

About half of the employees act like it is the worst freaking job in the world. They constantly have an attitude with customers and other employees. Everything is an inconvenience. Honestly if you don't sit there and whine the job is pretty awesome. Full time can be a tad more competitive with opening cards and I constantly had Full Time employees come up to me in front of customers and tell me to ring the sell up under their name. Besides that the scheduling is a bit wonky. It's completely random which for me personally didn't bother me but was inconvenient for most. When I attempted to transfer to a different location however that Macy's never called me back. I walked in, I called, and they didn't even have the respect to call me back and say they had no opportunities which they originally told me they had. I went from loving my job to resenting it. It just makes you learn it really depends on which location you work at whether you will love or hate it. I stopped trying to transfer because I realized the new store was not the place for me.

I have been working at Macy's part-time for less than a year

    Pros

Good to have a part time job while looking for a full times job. Love working with people(customers). Putting together clothing ensembles for purchasers.

    Cons

No benefits for part timers, competition between Associates makes people nasty.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I believe the Associates should be trained how to get along with other Associates who receive commission and treat each other as they would a customer.

I worked at Macy's full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The customers are great! I earned commission which was a nice incentive. Benefits were good as well. Scheduling I like, but many didn't.

    Cons

Working until 2am on Dec.23! Management varied immensely, some we're outstanding while others were useless and rude! They are now pushing clientele sales, which I see the benefits but management wants quantity verses the quality they asked for in traIning.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Jump in once in a while. Smile, you should lead by example. Very few managers coach, which is odd since that is such a focus of the company.

    Pros

Great commission, over all a nice place to work and the staff is nice and helpful. Everyone got along nicely

    Cons

Retail hours, the store was so slow on Sundays and I also didn't like the holiday hours staying open late and opening early

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

inventory, customers, empowerment, all terrific, hard to be any better.

    Cons

But 1% commssion on sales when tradition for decades in retail shoes has been 5-10% especially women's shoes, is indefensible. Finish-Line athletic shoes, a separate vendor, pays 2% on sales to Macy's, but store keeps 1% apparently.

I have been working at Macy's part-time for less than a year

    Pros

    - Employee Discount (20% off most days, 30% off once a month)
    - Macy's money ($3 off a $6 purchase; $5 off a $10 purchase; etc.)
    - Getting to know the customers
    - You can view your schedule online and pick up shifts that way
    - My managers are very understanding and supportive - not intimidating at all
    - As a Sales Associate, Macy's consistently provides us with new technologies for us to make connections with our customers and help them out

    Cons

    - The pay is TERRIBLE for the amount of work we contribute
    - While the online schedule option is wonderful, it's hard for associates who don't have computer nor internet access at home
    - Working through the weekend

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper management - find ways to show your employees they mean more to you. Minimum wage is a terrible starting point. If someone excels at their goals consistently, they deserve a raise!
