I worked at Macy's as a contractor (more than an year)

    Pros

I liked working here because I was able to manage a cosmetic counter.
Also, commission paid by the company I worked for was good.

    Cons

You have to be a self starter and be motivated to learn product on your own.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Better training.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

    1. The employees are great to work with Nice pay if your a college student or living with your parents
    2. If you aren't able to work a certain day that you are assigned or you picked up, you can advertise it to other associates to pick up on the Macy's site.

    Cons

    1. They expect you to consume everything from training. When I first started I was thrown on the floor like I knew everything.
    2. Picking up shifts are like animals fighting for the last piece of meat.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

you can come in as scheduled and train and get paid for training

    Cons

Ive been sitting in front of a computer for 3 days @ 5 hrs a day and no one has bothered to come in and assist or ask if I have questions. EVERYTHING you are supposed to know is via a computer program including how to use the register. I have to figure it out on my own and there is a ton of crap about pushing people to open charge accounts and just dumb stuff that is a waste of time in my opinion. Then you are thrown to the wolves to fend for yourself. And don't forget sales goals....ugh!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Need to get trainers that do more than throw you in a room in front of a computer and expect you to come out a star seller! No one bothers to help and no one seems to care to want to help.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Most employees are nice. Often easy to get people to pick up shifts you don't want or can't work. Good training. Paid training. 20 percent employee discount and chance to earn Macy's Money for doing tasks. Management decides on MM amount, from making goals, to opening credit cards etc.

    Cons

I was told I could pick up hours when I needed them, but for the past few months no hours have been available. As a part timer I've been working only 12-18 hours a week when I was told I could flex up to 30 hours. Management often pressures you to make goals that are impossible and are mean to you because they feel pressure from higher ups.

I have been working at Macy's full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

As a commissioned sales rep, earnings are limitless and there are constant promotions that keep steady traffic through the store.

    Cons

Overpriced goods of questionable quality. Employees are nameless to management. The Macy's brand seems to have lost its luster over the years.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut the computer based training and replace with in-class, human interaction. Level of customer service at Macy's is a product of ineffective computer training. Also, raise standards for goods promoted and sold.

I have been working at Macy's

    Pros

The people you meet are friendly. You can make lifelong friends when you all work at the same level.

    Cons

The pay is absolutely atrocious. We have the highest turnover due to such a low wage & poor treatment.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Treat the "lowest totem" employees like we matter. Raise the wage and improve the working hours & conditions.

    I worked at Macy's full-time

    Pros

Workforce at the stores are friendly and caring. Prestigious titles for a business card. On the cusp of brick and mortar changes. Brand name well known. Empowerment of associates make them feel part of the team and a mover/shaker.

    Cons

Being told to do more with less, constantly. Pay is not competitive to keep top talent. More trust and ability for stores to make change without constant corporate oversight. Aggressive goals that are not part of trend for the area that set up stores to fail and people to not make bonuses, esp when their data indicates customers are moving towards online purchasing. Inventory management is non-existent and lack of dedicated support to fix. Sending more emails does not mean better communication.

I have been working at Macy's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The idea of Macy's is wonderful and it’s an iconic company. What they claim to stand for is great. There are a few people in management that are passionate about what they do. It's a wonderful way to interact with people on a daily basis if you crave human connection.

    Cons

The company values are truly skewed. They tell you the customer is their top priority but expect you to shove the store card onto every customer regardless of circumstance. Customers are tired of being badgered about Star Rewards but Macy's could care less. Be weary of taking a position that is Draw vs. Commission because if your department isn't a hot seller and you're not an overbearing shark you'll end up in deficit and threatened with termination. They pay a step above minimum wage and give you ridiculous and unreasonable sales goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

I've overheard managers on several occasions belittling the sales associates. Not only is it unprofessional but it's offensive. Your success is dependent on the success of the associates you seem to think are a notch above stupid and useless.

I have been working at Macy's as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

You get to choose your own schedule and hours, not a hard job, good associate discount.

    Cons

Short hours, Expected to learn everything quickly, computer based training stinks it is too brief and does not cover a lot. They need more extensive training. Lack of management and organization in different areas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More training needed and lack of organization in different areas and management.

I worked at Macy's part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Flexibility in scheduling was great with a full time college schedule. Coworkers were pleasant and fun to be around. Macy's Money is a great perk for opening credits

    Cons

Put too much responsibility with not enough pay. Management wants you to do a thousand things a day within a four hr shift. Could be slow at times

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote the proper people when needed
