I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (less than an year)

    Pros

Pay is okay. Semi- annual bonuses. Not a lot of micro-managing

    Cons

This is is a new public sector program with state oversight so there is never an answer to anything. Magellan is constantly over-promising and under-delivering to its customers . We are one year into the program and still very disorganized, partially because we can't keep well trained staff around long enough to keep things running smoothly. Management is too swamped to train people or even respond to their emails. Do yourself a favor and stay away.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

At a CMC of 140 people, I don't understand how there is no HR on site, I have never met a single HR person from Magellan- maybe you guys should look at your turnover rates and make a trip from corporate?

We know you all are busy but engaging with your staff goes a long way.

I worked at Magellan Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Decent PTO, flexible hours, friendly front line staff.

    Cons

Decisions are based on the cost to the company not what is in the best interest of the member. I would have to say that senior and middle leadership are clueless to what really goes on in the company because if they are aware of the unethical behavior that continues then shame on them. DOBI should shut them down but wait..Horizon already took care of that.
There is an overall lack of communication or any type of consideration given to their employees. No life/work balance.
Advancement opportunities only exist if you are with the "in crowd".

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In trying to get ahead you are stepping on people to get to the top. Remember those people because you will pass them again on your way down!
Think of the impact your decisions have on these innocent members instead of the impact on your bottom dollar.

I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Mature company, fairly stable but a lot of changing right now. PTO is reasonable, remote working conditions are good, flexible work hours, trying to be a progressive, growing company.

    Cons

Promotions are limited, raises and salaries are weak unless you're a new hire or senior leader. They rotate through a lot of outside senior management which is very disruptive. Pretty intense work environment and it seems to get only more demanding. The market is changing and Magellan is trying to change, but it seems like they have a long way to go. It's a top down environment and they are not much in tune with the work at mid and ground level. Antiquated systems. Poorly organized. Behind the times.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop the revolving flow of senior leaders that don't know the business and reduce the number overall. Need more workers and less senior managers. Learn from mid and ground level staff and those that have been in and ignored for years. Don't be punitive when you hear things you don't like. Ask and be willing to really listen and act without retribution. Reduce the stress and intensity. Bring in more front-line staff to support all the new initiatives. Don't try to do everything and say yes to everyone and customize everything. Being flexible actually results in more limitations for scalability and being nimble. Figure out what you're good at or what you want to be good at and focus. Trying to do too much at once is pushing the business to the edge.

I have been working at Magellan Health full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Company give a very generous PTO and encourages staff to use it to its fullest advantage, no carry over of PTO, enriched insurance benefits, telecommuting encouraged in many areas of the company.

    Cons

Too many roadblocks and difficult to get anything accomplished. Decisions are all made at the upper level and can take many weeks to get something very simple approved. New phone system was installed three months ago and is still not being utilized because of politics.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Too many chiefs.

    Pros

Wonderful Co-workers - In the past was very team oriented and goal oriented.

    Cons

Local upper Management is unethical at best.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take out the trash in Nebraska - Start at the top and work your way down. Corporate office was made aware of the stuff happening at this CMC and did nothing.... Lip Service at it's finest.

This used to be an awesome, highly productive CMC, now it's shameful.

    Pros

The tasks that you are asked to perform are pretty simple and self explanatory. Great for individuals that like others to think for them (not required to make decisions).Upper management were very accessible, they managed by walking around. Increase in company culture with activities and events. The employees that I worked with were great until...

    Cons

They laid off or quietly pushed out all of the tenured employees. Jobs are very repetitive. No room for growth even if you have been there for years, unless you are a Chatty Cathy. Individuals that go to work, perform at an exceeding rate, and go home will not advance into a position other than supervisor even with a 4 year degree.
