I have been working at Management Sciences for Health full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

As junior staff, I feel that my inputs are valued. My supervisor is supportive and always "has my back". There are many opportunities for growth within the organization and the benefits are fantastic.

    Cons

Leadership doesn't have a thorough understanding of MSH's role in the health sector. Although not a major problem in my particular department, many junior staff in other departments feel there is limited room for growth. Senior staff are often disrespectful to others (including fellow senior staff) and there seems to be limited consequences for such behavior. There is an overarching "negative" culture that is hard to combat - but it is doable and it takes the efforts of many to change organizational culture.

I have been working at Management Sciences for Health (more than a year)

    Pros

MSH has great people, great location in Arlington and great benefits. The organization is going thorough many changes and it can often be viewed as unsettling, or demotivating. I believe that once the change is complete and everyone has settled into the new way, things will work out well and the organization will be well on its way.

    Cons

The current changes and navigating through it. Career development is often a challenge due to limited funding. I do however believe that the organization is addressing this in many creative ways.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

There should be more cohesion at the Leadership level. Leave your ego's behind and look at whats best for the organization. Understand what you can be flexible on and support business thinking.

    Pros

Very compelling work done by incredibly talented people. Amazing opportunities to grow. learn, and travel if you land in the right place.

    Cons

Seems to be a lack of career direction and movement, unless you really work for it. However, there are concerted efforts to change this.

    Pros

Great benefits, opportunities to travel, employee-centric, opportunities to directly contribute to the projects and interact with international colleagues

    Cons

Some of the upper management are very academic and a little stuffy, working for USAID requires dealing with a lot of red tape and formalities, need to change course at the drop of a hat to respond to USAID requests, finance & operations staff are not seen as equal team members and have little opportunity to make valuable contributions or travel.

I have been working at Management Sciences for Health full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Potential to reach many vulnerable people who need access to quality and affordable healthcare in developing countries, affecting change on a massive scale, leeway to be innovative and carve out a niche for your work, organization is constantly seeking to grow and to be the best version of itself

    Cons

Inexperienced managers, lack of mentors to facilitate professional development, little to no established professional development opportunities

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Start focusing on the value for money that younger staff bring to the organization. There are many multi-talented junior analysts that are motivated and committed to advancing the MSH cause and work, who are being overlooked for opportunities.
