I worked at Manulife Financial as a contractor

    Pros

Senior management is pretty good. Great work/life balance.

    Cons

I used to work for operations and there are too many unambitious gossipy women and way too many middle aged or/and socially awkward men who stare at women or try to get their attention. Maybe they need to hire some young talent who actually belongs to the 21st century. It's like working for a gigantic, bureaucratic sinking ship company that is still stuck in the late 1970's and 80's. Terrible, terrible, terrible!

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

There were no pros! Forced overtime was common. Poor pay was part of the environment. Management gets moved around so frequently that they do not have time to learn the business area that they are managing. Do not expect a reward for being loyal to the company!

    Cons

The company was on the verge of economic collapse in the 2008 crisis and I do not believe that they have cleaned house and restructured to the point where they can withstand the next economic shock.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Replacing Don Guloien would be the best first step in getting talented management. Do you really think that he should be running such a company only having a high school diploma? Come on!

I worked at Manulife Financial as a contractor for less than a year

    Pros

Work-and-life balance is good, suitable for employee who is not looking for speedy career development

    Cons

No challenging culture, most of line managers dislike subordinate with challenging attitude, they tend to 'eliminate' the subordinate with this kind of culture.

I worked at Manulife Financial full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    a. Manulife has a relatively brand awareness amongst consumers due to its leading market share (no 2) in the MPF space.
    b. In terms of junior staff, I'm quite impressed with the attitude and ability of those hires.
    c. Head office (Toronto) is willing to spend to build the Asian business.

    Cons

    a. Highly political environment, especially at corporate office and senior management level. This leads to a lot of instability.
    b. Despite the quality of the hires, good employees don't stay for long. Junior to middle level staff are frustrated by lack of promotion opportunities. At the senior level, there is a lot of movement due to in-fighting. There is an entire department that comprises largely of rejects/outcasts of the current leadership.
    c. Inefficient deployment of capital due to poor understanding of operating landscape in Asia.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the business and the people.

I have been working at Manulife Financial full-time

    Pros

Salaries are at least in line with market median
Your may enjoy work-life balance depending on your department culture.

    Cons

Extremely political working environment, leading to high teams turnover.
Expat denominated management with poor understanding of local business nuances

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More sincere employee engagement and communication is required.
Company is undergoing a euphemistic "Efficiency & Effectiveness" initiative, which is perceived as simply an excuse to cull employees who don't toe the line of his/her manager and to replace with cronies.

    I worked at Manulife Financial

    Pros

    bright intelligent people
if you are vocal, assertive, and you align yourself with the right people you could have a good future with the company
    benefits are not bad
international company with a lot of rich history

    Cons

cannot trust senior management, although they may be saying one thing, their actions are totally different
very competitive environment so you see a lot of dirty politics
employee recognition practices are not fair. promotions are difficult and given to a select and favoured few.
you'll find bitter and unhappy people throughout the company
actuaries are automatically promoted to at least AVP level (may be seen as a pro if you're an actuary)

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

be open and transparent, focus on developing talent and loyalty to the company, remember the pride values, and try to eminate the practices that dominic left behind.

I have been working at Manulife Financial

    Pros

Decent vacation time to start, lots of different paths to choose from (individual life, group benefits and wealth management, to name a few)

    Cons

There is a lot of turnover. I don't know who has posted such glowing reviews, they certainly aren't from my area. People with the least amount of experience are promoted over people with the most knowledge, and there is a lot of work being moved overseas, so for the majority of employees, this is not a company to retire with, as your job is more likely than not going to be outsourced at some point. Our shares tanked 2 years ago, and seem to have never recovered.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Promote the right people, stop with the friends and relatives bit. Consider experience a benefit, not a liability.
