I worked at Marathon Oil full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

training opportunities, working with latest technology in expanding areas, opportunities to network, insurances is pretty good, 401K is really good, PTO is very nice (9/80) & fair vacation policy

    Cons

many teams are understaffed which leads to lots of late hours & working on 9/80 day off, very difficult to move into management (Grade 12 glass ceiling, lots due to good-old-boys-network and outright nepotism), and lack of qualified/capable lower & mid-level management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

This company needs a really hard management shake-up. Current management tends to hinder innovation and progress via the strong corporate political environment. Unrealistic expectations lead to missed targets and timelines ultimately leading to ineffective use of capital. Upper management needs to be more in tune to the realities of their reports.

I hear that lots of changes have occurred since new CEO has come in. Well deserved and long overdue!

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Location, pay, benefits & there are some nice people that work here.

    Cons

Complacency, unwilling to change, racial & sexual orientation slurs, SOX violations, does not hold bad performers accountable, no career advancement outside of engineering.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The "Good Old Boy" approach doesn't work anymore. Tired of dealing with people who won't do their job. No one in senior management is proactive only reactive. A lot of people in this company need to be let go because they refuse to manage/fire bad perfomers. Also, its 2013, ditch the racist & sexist remarks they are a real issue.

    I worked at Marathon Oil

    Pros

Very friendly, good gym, small company atmosphere, laid back style, hakuna matata

    Cons

Complacency, improper procedures, lack of due diligence in business, inaction.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ensure qualifications needed to work senior level, before offering advanced Sr. Level. Lack of qualifications, poor leadership skills at this level could really harm company.

    I worked at Marathon Oil

    Pros

Opportunities to learn. However the opportunities depend on who you work for.

    Cons

Your career path is out of your control. Quality work not necessarily rewarded. Very political with old guard.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees, not the management that reports to you every day. You may find the truth.

    I worked at Marathon Oil

    Pros

    Good people, great technical people

    Cons

Supervisor had no backbone in supporting people under her, would throw anyone under the bus to save her own job.
No feedback from Supervisor until it was too late
Manager was dishonest and did not go out of his way to mentor or help any of the geoscientists
Supervisor had no people skills and training to be in the position of managing other people
When hired I was told that rotating into other projects was encouraged and easy to do - it wasn't
No communication between management and people on expectations until it was too late

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

more people management training for new supervisors, especially ones who have proven that they are in over their heads
Second chances are not a bad thing
Supervisors are employees advocates, make sure you have the stomach to stand up for them
If you are afraid to speak to people working under you, you should NOT be in management
