    Great Company, Neutral IT

    IT Manager (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsGreat Company, clear direction, knows where it was going
In IT everyone working to do the right thing

ConsSignificant Management change the resulting impact to the corporate culture remains to be seen.
IT Leadership had no direction and somewhat disfunctional, tough to work across silos.

Advice to Senior ManagementBe careful not to ruin a great corporate culture.
IT Leadership needs to figure out what IT needs to be and plot a course.

    Easy place to work

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

ProsGreat work/life balance, people are friendly and want to do the right thing despite some old-school folks who are still around and didn't retire yet.

ConsNo real career advancement unless you count staying here 30 years, then you can advance, maybe.

Advice to Senior ManagementFollow through with your proimise to invest in people. Look inside a little harder before you go hire from the outside.

Good starter or advanced career company. Could use a boost in the mid-career level.

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsGood work life balance and benefits.
Some good people with lots of industry experience.
Good place to get experience early in your career.
Company prides itself on diversity initiatives.

ConsCareer can become stagnant after several years.
Rather resistant to change, but recent changes in leadership appear to be helping.
Need to manage poor performers more effectively, rather than shuffling them around.
Promotions/rewards appear to be more driven by office politics than merit.

    Good Experience

    Advanced Accountant (Former Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsNice location, good benefits. The people that you work with are very helpful and the compensation is market salary.

ConsNot enough career advancement. Management does not notice any of the work that you put in and it seems like advancement is only for senior levels.

    Great company to work for

    Drilling Engineer (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

ProsPeople are great, they care that you learn as much as you can. I really enjoyed my time working there.

ConsHard to move up, company going through a hard time right now because of the split. They are still trying to find their identity.

    HES Professional (Current Employee)

ProsFamily friends and work = the same I have matured at marathon and find myself ready for the next chapter.

ConsSecrets are very much a part of marathon and you need to get over it and get on with it.

Very good with training, mentoring and education but poor on fairness for promotions.

    Refining Engineer II (Current Employee)
    Catlettsburg, KY

ProsGreat management team, good people to work for, lots of training opportunities.

ConsPoor posting of available opportunities, too much good ole boy when it comes to promotions and advancements.

Advice to Senior ManagementProvide a clear set of achievements and goals for advancement in grade level and make it failr for everyone. Indiividual managers can pick winners and losers to easily and one person can rail road an individual for any reason.

Very Political, Good Work Life Balance

    Former Engineer (Current Employee)
    Houston, TX

    ProsMarathon offers flex time--9/80
    Intelligent workforce
Compensation is pretty good, (including bonuses for professionals)

ConsMarathon is very political. They do not promote growth from within unless you are a "favorite". There is lack of diversity and cultural sensitivity. They do not offer any maternity benefits as most competitors do, this is something that definitely will keep female professionals from staying with the company or even joining. They need to re-visit their antiquated benefits package and add both maternity leave and paternity leave. Health-care deductibles are also very high if you have a family,if you are a single or even married, not so bad, but still can be better.

Advice to Senior ManagementMy advice is offer a better benefit package (health). Most working females save all of their vacation and sick time in order to have some time off for maternity leave. There should also be paternity leave. Do not ever let go of the 9/80 or flex time, this appears to be one of the most competitive factors of the benefit package.

    Local cashier

    Cashier (Former Employee)
    Sunfield, MI

    Prosclose to home
    know everyone that shops there

ConsBoss would show favor to certain people
there were a lot of people that were talked about behind their back

Advice to Senior Managementbe fair to all the people that work at the company, not just the ones you like.
don't act like you are better than others

    Great Benefits - Lousy Location

    Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
    Findlay, OH

ProsPay and benefits are stellar for engineers. There is potential to work on some interesting projects. Friendly work environment. Managers are approachable and know you by name.

ConsNot a very diverse working environment. Many ideas and viewpoints are lost because everyone is from the midwest. Potential for resume building projects exists, but they are few and far between. Findlay can be fun, but entertainment options are lacking.

Advice to Senior ManagementIt seems you are doing well compensating employees against peers in the industry. Give them some work to do so they can earn that compensation.
