I have been working at Marathon Oil as an intern for less than a year

    Pros

Everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming! The intern program is well-structured with training, social events, and leadership opportunities. They make sure the supervisors of interns have real projects for them to work on, not just busy work. I have projects with groups across my department, so I’m getting a lot of experience in a short amount of time.

    Cons

If you don't like change or you can't deal with uncertainty it's a tough time to work here. In the past year they've gotten almost an entirely new executive board, so big changes are happeneing all the time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

With all the changes make sure you stay true to Marathon's culture and values. Improve the company, but don't change it into something unrecognizable.

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Succession planning, integrity & values, family-like workplace, not a big fish in a small pond and of course the wonderful 9/80 flex schedule!

    Cons

Retention and hiring good talent in a competitive Houston O&G market.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue succession planning and never get rid of 9/80s

I have been working at Marathon Oil full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Possible to have some of the best work / life balance in the industry. : 9/80 flex days, lots of vacation. Also possible to overwork, and give back vacation, depending on the project you have.
    Good projects in Bakken, Eagleford.
Lots of room to grow for young employees as the older ones are retiring.
Friendly, "family" culture with lots of long time employees.

    Cons

Still too Bureaucratic for an independent. Company is working at becoming more efficient.

Budget is Focused on Bakken and Eagleford - sensitive to oil price drops in the future. Needs to keep portfolio broad.

I have been working at Marathon Oil for more than 10 years

    Pros

Best of the "old school" and rapidly retooling for today and tomorrow. People, teams, family, health and safety are "true priorities".

    Cons

Not so quick to change but extremely focused when the decision is made.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to listen to the employees and build on established trust. They are a vast untapped resource. Everyone has more that they are willing to share and contribute.
