I have been working at March of Dimes full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Good mission, people care about what they do. Great history of success, and does more than most people think to prevent prematurity and birth defects.

    Cons

Lots of cost cutting in all areas during the last few years. They seem to think that spending less will magically make things better. Environment is stifling for growth and new ideas.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try something new. Change! More training for new staff, investment in new things.

    Cons

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The organization as a whole is fantastic, it just depends on what your specific office culture is that will determine your opinion of the job.
Great benefits package - retirement, vacation, and holiday time.
    Competitive salary.
Summer hours are pretty nice from Memorial Day - Labor Day.
Organization is research based, and the majority of the money that is raised does go to the mission.

    Cons

They say they are flexible, and the organization overall may be, but it really up to your boss.
Work-life balance isn't so great, especially around March for Babies season.
They don't give hour-for-hour comp time, and that is at the manager's discretion so if you have a strict manager, its terrible.

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Good cause. Employees really want to make a difference. Really great people to work with. I loved working with all of the incredible parents who do so much to help March of Dimes.

    Cons

Upper management is too focused on numbers. They are not cultivating good relationships with many of their donors and even their employees for the sake of reaching unrealistic fundraising goals.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management pushes their employees to reach unrealistic goals. There were several instances where local employees knew that the goals were unrealistic, but the management forced them to pursue those goals and then punished the employees for not reaching them. Management is hurting employees and donors by acting out of desperation for funds, rather than investing long-term in cultivating relationships and patiently working to grow relationships with family and corporate donors. A little care now could result in committed, consistent future donors.

I worked at March of Dimes

    Pros

Use of technology and ample training helps newcomers learn core standards and best practices. Most team members feel real passion for the mission of stronger, healthier babies.

    Cons

High employee turn-over impacting the ability of organization to achieve real and sustainable fundraising growth. Very limited administrative support places extreme pressure on fundraisers to "do it all" (data entry/marketing/communications/event management) when focus should be on developing and growing donor/sponsor partnerships.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Chapter Leadership team should limit "hands-on" direction to Division staff in order to curb contradictory messages. Currently there are too many layers of "management" and community fundraisers are unclear to who they are taking direction from. Organizational structure should be reviewed and job descriptions revised.

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time

    Pros

My immediate supervisor is amazing. Super supportive, flexible, fun, absolutely great. I really like a lot of my volunteers. We are able to have a really casual, friendly relationship instead of feeling like I'm always trying to sell them magic beans.

    Cons

The policies at the national level set the peons up for failure a lot of the time. They are very concerned with money and sometimes worry about that more than retaining supporters. It can really frustrating , especially when it alienates volunteers.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop trying to squeeze revenue out of absolutely everything. There are some events that should just be goodwill events to increase our exposure in the community. Stop making your employees feel like really underpaid encyclopedia salesmen.

    Pros

The mission of the organization is great and they are working toward a wonderful cause. The volunteers are wonderful! It was a good starter organization to work with in the early time of a career.

    Cons

Standards for performance review are skewed and it makes it impossible to get anything higher than effective. Expectations to work 70 hour weeks when needed but not supposed to tell the upper management because it's not supposed to be happening. Traveling expectations based on weather conditions were life-threatening and there was no concern for safety. Good luck transferring or moving within the organization, they do not hire within first which makes it impossible to grow. False promises are made and not followed through with.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't place employees in upper management experience who have no experience. Success starts with leadership, and leadership is lacking.
