Consider your options

Community Director (Former Employee)

I worked at March of Dimes full-time for more than a year

ProsThe mission of the organization is great and they are working toward a wonderful cause. The volunteers are wonderful! It was a good starter organization to work with in the early time of a career.

ConsStandards for performance review are skewed and it makes it impossible to get anything higher than effective. Expectations to work 70 hour weeks when needed but not supposed to tell the upper management because it's not supposed to be happening. Traveling expectations based on weather conditions were life-threatening and there was no concern for safety. Good luck transferring or moving within the organization, they do not hire within first which makes it impossible to grow. False promises are made and not followed through with.

Advice to Senior ManagementDon't place employees in upper management experience who have no experience. Success starts with leadership, and leadership is lacking.

A timeless nonprofit, not keeping up with the times...

Community Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time for more than a year

ProsAmazing work schedule - very flexible, often you can work from home, "full time" is only 35 hours a week
Stellar Benefits - probably THE BEST insurance plan if you will be having babies!
Passionate people - who doesn't support the cause of healthy babies!?

ConsVery low pay, with little opportunity for advancement.
High expectations that basically set you up for failure
Resistance to change from the top of the organization, little control at the state or division level

Advice to Senior ManagementAlthough we were the first national nonprofit, and the first "march" of any kind - we need to target our audience and create a more marketable event. We need our events and our cause to stand out compared to the hundreds of other nonprofits we are competing with. Otherwise, you need to understand we will not see 10% growth YOY in every site!

– I'm not optimistic about the outlook for this company

Easy job, easy money, but not the least bit fulfilling.

Temporary Part-Time Team Specialist (Former Employee)
Orlando, FL

I worked at March of Dimes part-time for less than a year

ProsI was part-time and temporary. They were very flexible with my hours. I could change days each week and no one cared, as long as I got my work done.

ConsThis organization has no purpose. Once they cured polio, they should have shut their doors. But they created a brand, so they wanted to continue. The organization exists for the benefit of the employees (they need paychecks). There wasn't enough to do. I was bored senseless.

Over worked and underpaid!

Senior Community Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time for more than 5 years

ProsNationally Recognized Company and great cause, helping and supporting womans health and saving babies! Vacation, sick and holiday leave is fair and in the summer given opportunity to work longer days Monday-Thursday to get half days off Fridays

ConsUntrained management getting younger and younger, unequal pay sclae for like positions across the country, Ask too much from volunteers! No pay raises in years!!! NO RETIREMENT MATCH!!! Even took away New Years Eve as a Holiday!

Advice to Senior ManagementTake a look at the work load before adding amymore!!! Go back to faithful employees that are being paid unfairly and adjust their salary to match the newer employees being brought on at a much a high pay scale for doing the same or most times less of the job!

Stressful

Community Director (Current Employee)

I have been working at March of Dimes full-time

ProsGreat mission and organization. Flexible with families. Full benefits. Safe work environment. Expenses for miles driven. Plenty of educational tools to improve performance. Would recommend to a friend

ConsYour 'to-do' list is always full with each item being priority. Overwhelming and stressful. Very little room for growth unless you transfer to another division. Part time employees are not paid for holidays or days off. Not for the timid.

Advice to Senior ManagementTake note of competitors work style and pay scale to upgrade within. New ideas should be accepted and explored, instead of sticking to the old trodden path

Good organization, but too far removed from mission to be fulfilling

Anonymous Employee (Former Employee)
White Plains, NY

I worked at March of Dimes as a contractor for less than a year

ProsWorked with great people but inconsistent standards of performance. Little supervision or coaching of problematic co-worker led to resentments from fellow employees held to a higher standard.

ConsMarch of Dimes puts as much pressure on employees as it does on donors to contribute. There is an ongoing pressure to get donations from employees and their friends to the point of being uncomfortable (for me).

Advice to Senior ManagementKnow when to say "when." It's bad enough that you are known to barrage one-time donors time and time and time again (more than other NFP), but with employees, there is an added pressure implied. Tone it down!

I worked at March of Dimes

ProsGood benefits, nice people, pretty good work environment.

ConsDifficult place to be a high-achiever if what you want to achieve is not a priority for management.

Advice to Senior ManagementPut more value on your hardest workers -- give them an opportunity to lead and excel if they demonstrate promise.

Excellent benefits, flexible schedule...not so great work/life balance

Community Director (Former Employee)

I worked at March of Dimes

ProsFlexible schedule, excellent benefits, a great cause, meet lots of people, no two days are ever the same, promotes from within

ConsTerrible work/life balance: long hours, lots of weekend and evening work; low pay, loads of turnover and management changes, frequently changing objectives

Advice to Senior ManagementReduce position turnover by hiring employees with experience and compensating them accordingly. So many Community Directors are recent college graduates using the position as a stepping stone to other jobs. Just as a community is getting used to their March of Dimes representative, they are given someone else to deal with. People like continuity--especially when it is someone to whom they are donating money.
