    Pros

Job security is better than average, business is growing incredibly fast but is also stable. Employees are willing to teach the new people and they build a very positive atmosphere. Many great people to work for. Great benefits, stock and borrowing options, 401K.

    Cons

IT/systems are extremely dated, but that is planned to be fixed within a year. Lack of communication between departments ("information silos") is quite visible. Office politics are there, but manifested much less than many other companies.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Career development could be fostered much more with a formal program, underwriting guidelines and best practices could be expressed to underwriting support more plainly in order to accelerate the issuance process

    Pros

Well established company. Doing things right to make good money & keep the company strong. Leaders are down to earth & good people persons. Associates are smart & happy.
Salaries are above average & offers bonuses to all employees, which you don't ever see anywhere else.
Wonderful work atmosphere, and very nice offices. Work hard & you get rewarded & recognized. Does not micro-manage their EE's, and gives them free reign to work the Markel Style. Good easy atmosphere to work in, making the days go by & lends to a happy staff.
Does things with ethics & good standards. Part of the success of Markel.

    Cons

None that I can think of.

    Pros

Markel has an extremely long, and consistent record of profitability. Even in soft economic markets, Markel Venture's financial investments have proven to be extremely well-made, and compensate for underwriting losses or overhead costs-- which are consistent concerns industry-wide. The company has an excellent employee-development program which allows for semi-autonomous decision making concerning the direction that employees wish their career to go. The famous "Markel Style" also promotes humility, flexibility, innovation, ethical behavior above as core values. I personally find this a refreshing corporate culture.

    Cons

Because the organization is so vast and has a great deal of different business units, cross-training or developing an in-depth knowledge of the organization can be time-consuming. The recent initiative to consolidate and stream-line/centralize many processes has helped to cut overhead costs and improve efficiency, which will improve this.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Markel has a consistent record of profitable, stable growth. Though others in the industry may criticize the rate of growth, I personally Markel's conservative approach to be the best approach, given current market conditions. Keep doing what you're doing, and know that your employees appreciate your expertise and excellent leadership.
