Great Company, Very Low Pay

Account Manager (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Marketing Werks full-time for more than 3 years

ProsWonderful culture, great for anyone just out of school, most everyone is very nice and easy-going, coming to work is fun, you get to keep travel miles and get to book personal hotel and flights (so you can use preferred chains), work can be challenging and fun

ConsPoor day-to-day management, some teams make it easy to get by without doing a lot of work, feels like a high school clique at times, weekend travel with little to no "reset" time or vacation compensation, lots of travel in general, no real sense of urgency until the last minute, enforcement of policy is lacking, very high turnover rate, bonuses that make you feel worse than not getting one at all.

Advice to Senior ManagementThe upper management is absolutely wonderful and very approachable, however day-to-day management needs more training. Marketing Werks wastes a lot of money and time by not properly training manager. Additionally, the company recently implemented Marketing Werks University, but a lot of the classes are not well structured - they should have more structure, be more professional and be mandatory. Once you become an Account Manager, your opportunities for growth and development within the company taper off unless you get moved to a piece of new business to run yourself - this needs to change to keep people around.

Great Experience and Culture but Very Demanding

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Marketing Werks as an intern

Pros-learn to understand marketing techniques and why they work
-first hand work with clients (some of the PPTs and Spreadsheets you make go directly to the clients)
-great laid back company culture
-birthdays are awesome
-alot of free time to do your own thing, but work comes sporadically
-can listen to music while working
-most employees are understanding and nice
-pay is solid for a internship

Cons-Very Demanding with your time
-full time internship here and you practically have no time for anything else
-sometimes employees give you work in a rude manner and make it seem like you don't know what you're doing when its them who doesn't delegate their task in a thorough manner
-Tight schedule if you have school also
-not guaranteed a full time job
-must go on road, prior to possibly getting full time job
-pay sucks for full time employee
-turnover rate is incredibly high

Yes, I would recommend this company to a friend

Good for your resume

Client Services (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Marketing Werks as an intern for less than a year

ProsThe work environment is very laid back and fun. Work attire is basically anything you want to wear. Great location in downtown Chicago. Majority of the employees are young.

ConsThe hourly wage for interns is not much, but that could be ok for the interns who are still in school and still getting support from their parents. Pay is barely enough if you are paying for your own rent and other living expenses. Sometimes I feel micro-manged as an intern. You have to work your way up to a full-time job position.

Great experience!

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)
New York, NY

I have been working at Marketing Werks as an intern for less than a year

ProsThey have some great clients and the company culture is awesome. As an intern, you will learn a lot about how to work with a major client and be able to experience agency work. Ability to look into other programs and even work events.

ConsMW is very last minute in notifying you about anything, take quite some time to get a response. Moving up to a full time MW employee takes quite some time, field experience during their tours is a requirement.

Get out before it is too late......

Anonymous Employee (Current Employee)

I have been working at Marketing Werks full-time

Pros-Fun atmosphere
-Good clients
-Great 1st job out of college
-Learn a lot when you are an ACC, AC & SAC
-If you are lucky to have a good manager, you WILL learn a lot from him/her
-They hire a lot of pretty people

ConsFrom your first day working there, management basically "hand picks" who they will help to succeed and advance in the company. If you are not one of the "chosen" ones, you will have to fight tooth and nail for everything. You will get promoted if you "besties" with your manager or do a lot of brown nosing to the proper people otherwise forget it. Learn what you can early so you can get out and apply your learnings at another company.

Advice to Senior ManagementRealize that there are a lot of people that are VERY unhappy working for you. Listen to your employees instead of sitting in your ivory towers pretending everything is fine and dandy.

Great Company, Still Needs Improvement

Client Services (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Marketing Werks as an intern for less than a year

ProsManagement is available to answer any and all questions you may have. Owners walk the halls just like everyone else.
The atmosphere is amazing, but can be to casual at times.
They entrust you with real projects and work. You do more than just print, bind, and make phone calls. You get the work on projects that make an immediate impact on the organization, client, and team you work on.
At MW, if you want to take on responsibilities, they will not fear away from giving you those responsibilities.
You get to work directly with the clients via meetings, and calls.
With such a fun culture, you get to participate in all company events like Halloween parties, company athletics, DOF (Day/Director of Fun), and many other events.

Oh, and did I mention that they work with some pretty awesome clients?!
- Verizon
- NFL
- Bridgestone
- Pretty Muddy
- Isis
- Air National Guard
- Playstation
- NHL
- Walgreens
- Chase
- IndyCar
- LEGO, and more!

You get a mentor when you arrive to show you the ropes and then you will eventually get a new mentor more on your team who will work to help you organize your work as well as help answer questions you may have.

ConsIn order to work in the office full-time you MUST go on tour. They will likely not hire you full-time if you do not have road experience. When you near the end of you contract it is more of a waiting game to see if their are any tours to go on.

Lack of compensation
Long work hours (they are working on this)
Pay is not competitive for the industry
Minimal room for strong growth within the company
High turnover rate at low-level positions (AAC, AC, SAC) due to lack for high level growth
Agency seems to have flatlined with regards to overall growth. Few New business deals are being made, and when they are, they are not a new client, but a new project for an existing client, therefore no new hires will be brought in.

Just because you put in a ton of work and effort, does not mean they will hire you in the future.

Advice to Senior ManagementInstead of having intern-road-office hiring process which allows for someone to gain experience and then level for better pay doing the same type of job, start a management trainee program separate from the internship or as a post-internship opportunity. This will allow for ACs to have real management experience in stead of simply being a road MM or BA. THis position should also have a good benefits package and be full-time. That is a great way to keep employees!

Communicate opportunities for growth better.
Give feedback on a regular basis
Work to integrate new staff into the organization, not necessarily just staff you have history with.
Keep to fun atmosphere, but make sure goals are met
Work to better communicate with the little fish, not just the big fish.

Great company for those recent graduates looking for their first job

Client Service Intern (Current Employee)
Chicago, IL

I have been working at Marketing Werks as an intern for less than a year

Pros- Laid back organizational culture
- Day-to-day tasks are flexible and vary
- Attire is casual
- Performance matters as you may have the opportunity to travel as a brand ambassador
- Majority of employees are young and friendly
- You learn essential things that you will use if you are able to stay with the company or elsewhere
- Company parties and events are enjoyable. If you put your time into getting involved and participating, you'll get the most out of it.
- Paid internship, full time, good hours
- HR does a good job trying to expand your time here through extended internships, on the road opportunities, or networking elsewhere.
- Overall a great learning experience and great insight look into the agency life.

Cons- Involvement/work in your programs are limited
- Internships do not lead directly into a full time position. Unless you are able to gain on the road experience (99% of employees have been on the road), do not count on having a full time position afterwards.
- Expected as an intern to assist in administrative duties (receptionist, etc.) and do miscellaneous office tasks such as Kitchen/Office duty
- Senior management rely on interns A LOT to do small tasks that they otherwise do not have the time or energy to do so.
- Senior management sometimes look down on you and are not friendly because of your 'intern' status (I have personally experienced this). Or they think they are being sarcastic when in fact it just looks like they are mean.
- Culture is somewhat cliquey, but manageable.
- Some days you are extremely busy; other days you are bored out of your mind.

Advice to Senior Management-Allow your program interns to flourish by delegating responsibilities that will challenge them, such as being responsible for road teams - things that we will eventually have to be responsible for
- Do not allow this great company to become segregated and cliquey.
-While some reviews tell upper management to hire experienced and specialized employees, continue to hire interns to allow them to gain insight and experience, and help them grow by giving us the opportunity to go on the road. How else will we grow as professionals if you don't give us that chance?
