I worked at Markit
Pros – - Learn a lot about finance
- Really nice people mostly
- Location is great
- Yoga class, massage sometimes, they send gifts for special occasions, some decent food stocked in the kitchen
Some of the people I worked with seemed visionary, talented and genuinely caring about their work.
Cons – - Noisy environment
- Repetetive work
- Lots of chaos and shuffling around of employees
- Poor communication from team leads
- High turnover
- Disconnect between what senior management says and what they actually do
WSOD changed for the worse in 2008. People began mysteriously disappearing from their desks without explanation, all the while senior management claimed that they would not have any layoffs. I was terminated within two months of receiving a great performance review. They gave me a 6 week timeframe to "shape up" my design skills, and I soon realized that it was a ruse - that no matter what I did they were going to fire me. I realize that companies need to clean house, but this came as a shock to me nonetheless.
Advice to Senior Management – - Be more explicit about expectations of employees
- Keep teams lean and mean, don't shift project managers midway through a project
- I felt so sorry for all project managers because they seemed underappreciated, underpaid and extremely low morale on that team
- Don't shuffle employees around so often, it's jarring and unexpected and makes people jittery.

I have been working at Markit
Pros – It's a good place to learn things if you are newbie and money is not your primary motive. People in general helpful and nice.
Cons – Low salary package and benefits. 50 hrs/week and unreasonable deadlines made by the management. Salary is almost 30% less then that of current market trend.
Advice to Senior Management – Please reward your employees. High attrition rate, can't able to retain potential good future prospectus. Decision should be made in open rather than in close door.

I worked at Markit
Pros – You learn a ton at WSOD and work with some amazing clients. The coworkers are really smart.
Cons – Stressful environment- everything is an emergency. Project managers seem to take the fall for most problems- lots of firings. Project managers are supposed to lead engineering teams, but the engineers do not answer to the PMs so they do not have enough authority.
Advice to Senior Management – Project Managers need to have more authority with the engineers if the are going to take the fall for problems.

I have been working at Markit
Pros – Salary compared to Investment Banks
Nice Benefits
Get a chance to work on the latest in industry in terms of business
Cons – Need to be in good team
Promotions are biased by managers.
Year end review system is laughable and completely controlled by managers.
Advice to Senior Management – Try to follow standards and everything will fall in right place.
Try to implement 360 degree review system in place.

I have been working at Markit
Pros – Young employees can gain a lot of responsibility quickly
Young / fun culture
First class office space
Flat hierarchy
Good work / life balance
Cons – Superior achievers can quickly rise to top of group and flat line thereafter- once you become an expert in a particular field, there is little transferability with this specialized/niche knowledge.
Promotions not necessarily merit based
Options vest over 5 years vs 2 - 3 years
Advice to Senior Management – Continue to provide training opportunities as you have started in 2010

I have been working at Markit
Pros – I was a mostly self taught programmer who is flourishing by finally working with smart people. Good sounding boards and if you're proactive you can learn a lot.
Cons – Quite low pay as far as I can tell compared to the industry at large. As soon as I stop learning here Ill have little incentive to stay.
Advice to Senior Management – While it's great that the company is growing, it's been hard having projects scale before developers as opposed to in correlation to each other.

I have been working at Markit
Pros – 1. Flat corporate structure
2. Able to work from home easily and often
3. Reasonably intelligent co-workers who willingly share their knowledge.
4. Reasonable work hours for the most part.
Cons – 1. Compensation stinks (salary and cash bonus are below industry standard and 5 yr vesting on stock options).
2. Office location - 41st Street & 8th Avenue = ghetto
3. Not enough women!
Advice to Senior Management – 1. Increase compensation to market standard unless your goal is to chase your top talent out the door. Many of us already have one foot out the door!

I have been working at Markit
Pros – Smart and friendly colleagues.
No pressure but may depend on your project.
Interesting projects.
The company may fit very good for individuals who want to start in finance industry.
Stable.
Cons – Salary seems to be below the average on the market.
Terrible HR department.
Cheap on custom employee requests.
No 401k appreciation.
Advice to Senior Management – Management should think about appreciation methods. Not just saying thanks or 'well done' when milestone reached. Make employee feel that company cares about him or she.
