I worked at Marriott full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

The culture of the company, especially at the company managed hotels, is outstanding. I didn't believe it when I heard that the basic management philosophy was, "take care of employees, they'll take care of guests, the guests will keep coming back, and the money will take care of itself." -- but it's true, and management lives it every day.

    Cons

At the time, the culture at the headquarters in Bethesda was not as welcoming as at the hotels.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up your move to more cutting edge digital and brand activities.

I have been working at Marriott

    Pros

Fair and consistent, meeting people from all over the world learning different cultures and learning about what they are visiting for. Learning about many different conventions guest are staying with us for.

    Cons

Over sold sometimes we have to relocate guest once in a while, not all the time though. Guest preference on room, higher floor nice view. At the end of the night rooms are tight and there are not many left to select from.

I worked at Marriott full-time (less than a year)

    Pros

The management treats you like a person. No nepatism. Everything done by the book. Flexible hours. You can move and usually transfer locations.

    Cons

Trying to get back in after leaving is difficult. Hotel hours are inconsistent at any hotel. Guests hit on you a lot but management will defend you.

I have been working at Marriott

    Pros

The people really love what they do and they work hard to make sure you do the same.

    Cons

Hotel industry hours are terrible, but that's not Marriott's fault.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Consider your front desk associates a vital part of the business.

I worked at Marriott as an intern (less than a year)

    Pros

Most people here will take the time to teach you whatever you're interested in. It's a very fair, positive environment.

    Cons

Can be very political, and occasionally progress is stalled because managers are stretched too thin.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Hire more managers, or perhaps spend more time training them to balance multiple projects.

    I worked at Marriott

    Pros

The benefits are outstanding, paid time off, room discounts, medical etc....the money is great to.

    Cons

With so many employees you are just one of many. You have to not only do a good job but need to be creative to stand out from the rest.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Honestly I do not have advice for management. They do a good job and if it's not broke don't fix it.

I have been working at Marriott full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Pay is decent, hours are abundant, and the potential for growth is great!

    Cons

When working for a franchise property (all I've ever worked for), any thing good or bad is typically not on Marriott. An employee's experience is essentially based on the management company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Anyone that is over hiring knows that Memphis is a hard market to find good employees. When you notice one, pay them the most that you can and challenge them everyday. The fire and hunger to learn more and do more is already there, fan the flame and watch what happens!
